New skimmer help!

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I had the sapphire aquatics recirculating skimmer that fit in the biocube, i switched it over when i gave my friend the cube and it was pulling out some nasty junk (it was rated to support a heavily stocked 55)

200$ including shipping...im only 16 here! lol

If you watch the ads for stuff on other boards such as reef central, you may find a decent used skimmer in your price range.
But you will spend much more if you try buying skimmers like the sea clown or the super suck or the dead sea prism.

I just found a coralife super skimmer with the needle wheel for 100$ thats rated up to 220 what do you think

Coralife might think they are rated for 220, but they are not that good. I have only seen one decent reef that was running one and he did frequent massive water changes.

Buy a quality skimmer and save money by going used. There are many killer deals out there on good to great skimmers. Used octopus skimmers are cheap, even the Kent Nautilus (the lowest quality I would recommend) can be found for under $100.

The other day I forwarded you a link on a small euroreef on Ebay, it went dirt cheap. ASM bargains can be found. Just be persistant and research what the used ones go for.

Have you looked into any of the octopus skimmers? HERE is one for $199. Save up for the extra fourty bucks and dont look back until your 18 and want a bigger tank. :D

or you couild get this one for less but I'd personally get the bigger one

SeaClone/Sea Clown.. Junk also.. I have one I got before I knew better or found this forum. It's setting in a bucket collecting dust. I did get it to produce something though by drilling a hole in the top of it and assisting it with a wooden air block.

Trido, I agree Octopus NW-150 and NW- 200 are the best new skimmers available for the money. I think Joker can find a fair price on a used one if he is patient. Sorry for using the "P" word:lol::lol:

LOL... That was also my first skimmer. I even bouught mine after reading about it. I did every mod possible and went as far as cutting it in half and glueing it back together to mod it even further. I threw it in the garbage after only three months when a fellow reefer loaned me a CPR Bak Pak.

I don't think you are going to get anyone to agree with you on going cheap on your skimmer, atleast not here.
So far you have several links to quality skimmers in your budget range.
Buy good equipment,,, you'll be very happy in the long run.

I haven't heard anything bad about octopus skimmers.
There are a couple mods you can do to it to really soup it up.

Looks a little better than my asm.lol

Well that one was the one Trido suggested and HereFishyFishy, i was just double checking cause i found it on that website for 20$ cheaper...just making sure it was the same kind

Do a search here on octopus skimmers. I've seen them mentioned several times in the past.
May get some more good recomendations.
I'd be prepared to do a mesh mod on the impeller and a recirc mod.
