I got a new Aqueon 50 gal. tank. I am moving to Renton in June and want to set up the new tank at the new place and transfer the contents after I get it going. I will have all of June to do this. I am going to use some of my tanks water that I will save and transfer down there and make up some new saltwater, and will probably be a 50/50 mix. Does this sound right, any suggestions? One thing I have in my brain that is this new tank isn't drilled and I am very nervous how to do it. I don't want to screw it up nor do I know how to plumb the tank. I am currently using a Lifereef overflow box and it has been flawless and I have been very happy. I have been told it is the best one out there and I have shut the pump off many, many times and it starts right up each time. So I am looking for opinions.

After you move your tank don't make the mistake I did and amuse everything is already acclimated to your tank water.... You will have to acclimate all fish and coral. Your best bet is going to be to build you tank system and then just set it up at the new place because your system is going to need to run for a bit with a lite bioload anyway. As for Drilling its supper easy, Just get a piece of wood and use a hole-saw to make a jig to hold your glass hole saw in place so that its not sliding all over and scratching up your tank, keep some water on it to cool/lubricate the saw, use medium speed and lite pressure, when your at the end of the hole you want to back off the pressure even more and speed up the drill so you don't blow out a chunk of glass when you break through. You have to start somewhere and you can always pick up a small piece of glass from a hardware store to practice on if your really worried.

Thanks eartaker. We have the whole month of June so I figured I would set the new tank up what I figured I would do is save some of my water change water I take out and put it in the new aquarium. I would move my live rock down that doesn't have corals on them and get it going. If I drill the tank it will have to be on the back side as the bottom is tempered glass according to Aqueon customer service. I don't know yet, I might get an overflow kit from Gl*******s.com. We'll see.

wait i dont think hes drilling...? Ive moved tanks before and all u do is get a bunch of buckets with lids.Empty out as much water as u can. Than some rock and put it in the buckets. Try and get seperate buckets for coral, fish, rock ect.Use ur heater and powerheads and move em between buckets if needed. Ull be okay just need like some extra sw for top off cuz most likely in between ull lose some water somewhere. Basically ull think u have it all but u wont :)Good luck and hths

Use as much original tank water as possible in the new system when you make the move. You can do this all at once, or slowly through a couple of water changes. Just don't change out too much water at one time unless you are going to do it all at once. If it were me, I would try to get the new tank set up with 25% old water, 75% new, let it stabilize for a few days or weeks depending on your time frame. Then, move everything at once, along with all of your current water.

I moved my tank once with all new water and my corals slowly died over the period of a few months(though I don't blame the water solely, it was certainly a contributing factor. This last time I moved my tank(with the help of the great guys at Barrier reef), we tried to take almost all of my water, and I didn't lose a single coral.

Peace,
Jesse

I am not moving tanks, I will be moving from my current tank at my current place to a new 50 gallon at my new place, then I will probably sell my current tank when the 50 is set up. I have the month of June to move but I don't want to move the fish and corals until I am there to take care of them, permanently. I will do 20% water changes over a few weeks and then use fresh saltwater to top off, hopefully at least 60% of current water and hopefully more, the rest new. I want to move some live rock that doesn't have coral. The last thing is to move the live rock with the corals and fish (only two).

That is great news,
It sounds like you have a game plan. Try to set up your new tank as soon as you can get in there. The longer it runs before you move your livestock the better.
Dont fret about drilling your new tank, or plumbing it for a sump, there are plenty of ppl here to walk you thru it.
If you offer up some beverages and pizza I am sure someone would be glad to help out.
Good luck!! Keep us posted

Thanks peppie, I am going to try to get the tank put up within the first couple of days, using my 16 year old grandsons as slave labor. I think they will also demand pizza. They love helping their grandpa, whether they like it or not. I won't move the critters until later in the month.

If you do decide to drill let me know. I'll help with the drilling. I've used the gl*******s kit for my 40 breeder and I was impressed.
