Just a quick note to say hi.

Our 75 gallon semi-aggressive, mixed reef, community tank has been up and running for a year now. Still learning a lot.
Fortunately most of it has been from researching threads and books and not "field research".

Still have a few freshwater fancy pleco's, so only the salt part was brand new.

Looking forward to learning more and keeping the fish and inverts and corals happy.

Thanks,
Matt

what kind of plecos? had an opal spot once. used to breed sewellia lineolata. got the reef bug 2 years ago ( fish keeping for 13) and said goodbye to FW. even gave away my breeding community of the loaches.

norfolk,

welcome to RF!!

semi agressive tank, so what fish do you have? we love pics, so when your post count allows it, post pics. :)

A good book to have in your reef library is:

The Conscientious Marine Aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Saltwater Hobbyists (Microcosm/T.F.H. Professional): Robert M. Fenner, Matthew L. Wittenrich, Scott W. Michael: 9781890087999: Amazon.com: Books

first part of book talks about tank setup, water parameters, disease and treatment, aquascaping; the second part of the book talks about fish and what species to purchase and which ones to avoid..

Welcome to RF
Lots of experienced reefers here who like to help.
Cant wait to see "Your Garden" LOL

pleco's

Wow, that's very cool! How cold did you keep the sewellia lineolata?

We just have some of the easier smaller pleco's (under 8"). Flash, Red Cactus, a few morph's of ancistrus, butterfly, L200,
the grey one with black spots (can't remember the name to save my life right now...) It has lost almost all of it's white edging on the top fin. Got it, Sultan pleco.
Never did spring for the $300 zebra pleco. ;- )

I'm more of a collector at heart.
Still talking about breeding the Flash pleco's. We have 3. Not even sure if they are past prime sexual maturity at this point. They are about 5 years old.

We gave away a bunch of the pleco's when we switched the 75 gallon to salt. Most of the ones we kept got moved to the 37 gallon.

I really wanted to switch to pure "pretty" with the salt tank,. The pleco's are still awesome, but something besides neutral colors that hide a lot was the original inspiration for the salt tank.

welcome to the dark side my friend! and belive it or not that sewellia tank hit 84 dg in the summer with all the ho lights I ran to grow algea. there were in a monster flow river tank with sump and bioball filter for oxygenation...which I believe was the key and not really temp of the water.

Yes! we have that. :)
Also The 101 Best Marine Invertabates by Scott W. Michael, Algae - A Problem Solver Guide by Julian Sprung, Aquarium Corals by Eric H. Bornman, and Reef Invertabrates by Anthony Calfo and Robert Fenner.
Always loved having books in the house. The Corals book is the only one I haven't finished cover to cover yet. Been reading/searching online a lot.

The "Avoid This" sections, and why, have been some of the coolest info out there!

Hey Matt, another BIG WELCOME to Reef Frontiers and also looking forward to your participation here. I spent a couple years in your 'neck of the woods' Hampton, VA back in '74-'75 while my Dad was working at Patrick Henry AFB. It was quite the Culture/Weather Shock coming from the Seattle area for me back then.

Cheers, Todd

Ill bet! It's a little hotter here in the summer. ;- )

Did you get to try grits?

Visited a friend up in Anna Cortez a few years ago. Beautiful country! Reminds me of Vermont, but with the ocean right next to it.

Matt

75 gallon DSB paradise :- )

Matt,

You have a good selection of books. Glad to see you are reading before acting.. :)

The heat was doable but the H-U-M-I-D-I-T-Y was nearly unbearable to start with. Settled into our rental house mid August just in time for Football Practice to begin, was like doing wind sprints in Jello. Did like grits and side pork for breakfast but Southern Racial intolorance at that time was a hard pill to swallow and an eye opening event for me. My favorite places and things to do were swimming/fishing off the coast, Chesapeake Bay and Outer Banks of NC..... very warm water compared to Puget Sounds 44-48* seasonal variance.

Cheers, Todd
