My fascination with fish started with my annual 2 week trips to my Dad's place in the Tropical north of Western Australia. My father owns a pet store (freshwater only) and i really loved watching and looking after the fish while I was there.

After a few years I decided that I wanted to have some fish at home and bought a small Jebo 338 tank (about 30L) for my 2 bedroom apartment. I quickly got a good tropical tank started and acquired a second same size tank for the bedroom and started another tropical tank.

My girlfriends sister got married and when her husband moved into their new home he sold me his Aqua One 155L tank which after moving things around in the lounge room, I combined the 2 small tropical tanks into the one tank.

This worked find for a while, but I started to wonder if I could give marine a try. After looking longingly at different marine fish in numerous stores I decided to give it a go.

I resurrected the Jebo 338 tank and started with the live rock on marble chip (size 0, now size 00). After much trial and many errors we have our tank with a Male Mandarin, Female Dragon-net and 2 seahorses (one large one small). We know the large one is a male (gave birth), we think the small one is a female. We have change the standard powerhead to include a combination water chiller and heater to keep the seahorses comfortable during the Sydney summers. This setup has been going for about 12months.

We also set up the other 30L tank to mix freshwater with salt and keep it heated for when we do our water changes, and now have a timer on the tank lights to ensure they get sleep (so i don't forget)

We have been feeding our residents on a rotating diet of frozen brine and mysis shrimp and when we can get them they get a treat of live brine shrimp.

A week or so ago the seahorses stopped eating, although it appeared as though they were attempting to eat but the suction just wasn't working. After looking through the Internet we found a couple of articles on freshwater dipping, which we did and they are now eating, but the suction is still not working as well as it used to. A couple of days ago we noticed that the Dragon-net isn't interested in the food, she just sits on the bottom of the tank, so now not sure if there is something wrong.

I know the tank I am using is very small and it would be better to moving things to a larger size, but unfortunately the small unit is a limiting factor. I have read through some of the postings here and noticed a lot of talk about pods?? but I am not sure if we can get those things over here in Sydney.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Welcome to RF!! Hope you enjoy it here. There are a few others here that are from Austrailia as well that are regulars!:)

As for your tank, I've never personally dealt with sea-horses to say what may be going on. We have a member/mod here SteveS who is pretty sharp on these things and hopefully he'll chime in if he sees the thread. If not, maybe you can start a thread in his forum here http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15 As for the availability of pods over there, not sure where you can buy some, but you can probably find some in tidepools under rocks etc. I've seen tons here when turning over rocks. A few places over in the US sells pods, but may not be worth it to you to try and ship. I'll pm a member here Morgan who's from Australia and see if he knows of anywhere over there you can buy some:)

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the forum:)

Pods

Thanks for the quick responses, I have no idea what Pods are or how easy to use they will be. Do I just add them to the tank?

The seahorses are eating even though the suction is not there, so I am not too concerned about them. I am more concerned about the Dragon-net which is not interested in food.

Has anybody had any experience with Dragon-nets?

I really love the little guy!

hey welcome good to see more aussies here the jebo units are alright a friend of mine had a coral tank in one of them it only had 4 fluros and a moon wrasse a coral buety and sum clowns good to see another aussie keep it up dude

Thanks for the pods

Well thanks for all the ideas on the Pods and where to get them. Unfortunately yoiu can't get live Pods in Australia due to import restrictions, in fact the people I have spoken to are having problems with the gamma radiated ones due to restrictions and paperwork.

I did speak to a number of places after I found out US suppliers are not able to ship here and may be able to speak to our Dept of Primary Industries (fisheries Dept) who might have some cultures for experimentation they might be able to give me.

I also spoke to a reputable aquarium here who said, "oh, you can get copepod from dirty water, but if you keep your water clean it wan't be a problem". After explaining that I wanted to have live copepods they couldn't believe it and hung up on me.

I guess this is one area Australia is behind the US on.

After reading various articles and forum threads about peering into the tank by torch light, I decided to do the same thing. All I saw was some furry looking worm things. I hope these are good things?

Hi guys,

I have a Psychedelic Mandarin and not sure about the Dragon-net, it is either a Morrisons or a starry, but unfortunately he passed away today after many attempts to get him eating.

My girlfriend is upset so I will have to investigate another one.

sorry to rant but theres nothing i havent been able to find that i need to run a tank and keep a dragonet

Bugs

Hi Morgan,

No issues with keeping things out of Australia, I must have written the reply incorrectly. My issue is that nobody he seems to sell pods or even knows why people would want to.

The US sells them in solution to people to assist with fish, while Shops here consider them an infestation problem caused by dirty water.

All in favour of Quantine processes in Australia, we have more to guard here than simply the barrier reef as you know.

Just having a lot of difficulty trying to track down anybody who has them and will deal with them (live).

Hope that clears things up a little, sorry for any confusion.

has anyone suggested to you to start a refugium. you can keep chollorpa in it. ( i like red chatemorpha since they will not crash during reproduction) it will benefit your water quality and make sure to keep the lights on after your tank's lights go off,it will keep your ph balanced too. if you set up refugium you will eventually get coppod and ampipods and other bugs. this will feed your mandarine too. it will take time to get these bugs (as i call them) going.good luck. jakleen
