My new Angler...

He's a little bigger than a baseball, and I have no clue what species it is. I'm thinking he's Antennarius nummifer, but I'm not sure. I picked him up for the surprisingly LOW price of $53 (including tax). I saw the price and had to have him. lol

Very nice! I don't know much about anglers.....what do you/will you feed it?

Well, he's my second angler. I also have a 4" purple Wartskin Angler (attached pic).

The big guy...I'm leaning towards naming him Fat Tony...lol...is already eating frozen food. I acclimated him, last night, and he's currently residing in the 60gal. sump of my 200gal. tank. I just finished building a 40gal. cube, that'll be done by this weekend. That'll be Fat Tony's new home.

I was feeding the rest of my big predators, and went ahead and offered him frozen food. I didnt think he'd take it, cause he'd only been in the sump for about 20 min, but he ended up eating 3 whole baby octopus. I offered him more food, tonight, and he ate that too...he's a pig. From now on, he'll be on the same feeding regiment as the rest of my fish...every 3rd day.

Here's a few pics of my purple Wartskin...

Love the name "Fat Tony"! Thanks for posting about the food. How awesome he's eating already.

Wicked Fish Man, can we get a full tank shot

I dont have the tank done, yet. Right now, Fat Tony is living in the 60gal. sump of my 200gal. predator tank.

But, here are 2 pics of his future home. It should be done by this weekend. The middle hole is a 1.5" drain. The other 4 will be mixed between returns from the sump (the top middle right) and the other 3 will be set up for a closed loop system.

The last pic is even before I was done with the white trim, painting and drilling for plumbing. I'll get some more pics, this weekend, hopefully when the tank has water in it.

Well...the strangest thing happened...something I shouldve thought about, but didnt.

I had my new Angler in the 60gal. sump of my 200gal. tank with a 1" Scorpionfish. I came home from work, yesterday, to find the Angler dead. It looks like the Scorpionfish stung it and killed it.

Wierd, I know, but the Angler had massive bruising, on it's side (entry of the Scorpions spines) and it's stomach was grossly bloated (side effect of the toxin, I think).

So...

1" Scorpion = 1
8" Angler = 0

Cough Cough "sorry about your loss" people are saying?

ahem, think about how the fish feels?

Why would anyone buy a fish, just to dump it in a sump, along with another known venomous predator?

sounds like an impulse buy before the main tank was ready for it?

Not to sound like a butt head, but I hate it when losses of aquatic life could easily be prevented. Cool fish to loose, you don't see them in the hobby very often, so a rare treasure has been wasted.

Easy there...step down off the pedestal for a second...

I'm not a noob, so please dont talk to me like I am.

The Angler was not just "dumped in my sump". It was actually in the 50gal. refugium chamber of my 60gal. sump. And...you cant really say "Why would anyone buy a fish, just to dump it in a sump, along with another known venomous predator?"

I know many people that are keeping many other fish with these "venemous predators". So, dont act like I did this horrible thing by putting another fish in a tank with a Scorpion.

Sorry to "waste such a valuable treasure". Just out of curiosity...how many fish have you lost, since you've been in this hobby?...it happens to us all. Not everyone can foresee odd happenings.

Everybody stay mello, please. I have lost many beautiful fish and coral, through accident, error, and just plain ignorance of what I was getting into. I know for me everytime I get to argueing with another person, I just feel bad about and then have to go back and make amends. I hate making amends so I try not to argue. Nobody would ever intentionally kill a 53$ fish. It was a error that I am certian will not happen again to him. He is putting his pride on the line to tell us of a error in judgement he made. That takes a big person. Hopefully others can read of this and not make the same mistake. More than likely I believe what happened is these two fish were in the dark the angler attracted the scorpion fish and tried to eat it. It responded as it was designed to. If this had happened in the ocean no big loss. Since it is in a tank considering trans and capture losses it was a big loss. Please lets not turn this place into something like another board I used to visit. My favorite thing is the friendly people here. I feel comfortable admitting my mistakes and sharing ideas here. I am not always able to do the right thing, I frequently fail to. I learn and go on. I hope this came across well and you all understand why I said what I did. Steve

Okay Okay, everyone get together for a big fresh uncured live rock reef group hug.
