I have only one fish, the purple firefish or some say the elegent firefish, still in QT but comes out in 1 1/2 weeks. My tank is 170 gallons. I need help on picking next fish. It's going to be mixed reef/fish. My wife fish is the powder blue, I know that would be close to the last fish even if I am not sure I want to take the chance on that beautiful fish. Any suggestions, I love color and family love colorful fish, no black and whites. :) Thanks in advance.

Welcome Marty. I don't personally recommend fishes, since their choice is, in my opinion, very personal. There are some good, inexpensive fish books out there, including some in your local library, as well as on the Internet (from online stores that sell marine fishes) that you can look through.

Just remember to stock based upon their full size (not the size you find in the store or the babies you come across) and choose those you have researched and know you can feed and properly care for!

Good luck!

Hey Marty, as Lee suggested it is definitely a personal choice in picking out the fish in which youd like to take care of and buying/checking out a book is a great way to start a list of fish your family likes. A good book I'd suggest is 'Reef Aquarium Fishes' by Scott W Michaels beacause it targets so-called Reef-Safe Fish. Once you have put together a list of what you all really like then we can help narrow down to what will be compatible with each other and corals types youd also like to keep. I have a fairly large library of Reef/Fish books that you are welcome to check-out and/or borrow, I'm just -1mile East of Silver Lake if you would like to stop by some time.

Cheers, Todd

Thanks for the replies. I will look the next week or so and see if I can put a list down then maybe you can tell me the good and bad choices then order. Todd, you do live close, I live in silverfurs area just east of silver lake. I need to research how many inches of fish I can get and keep the bioload within par. Well, time for some studing. :)

marty,

the rule of thumb that I've always used (believe I read this somewhere on Lee's sticky) was for every 1 inch of fish equates to 3-5 gallons of water.

For example, so a 4 inch fish would use 12-20 gallons of water..
