Boomer...this part didn't make sense to me...can you explain what he meant to say here?

Death is, of course, a very crude indicator of toxicity. An aquarium's nitrite level should not come anywhere close to the LC50 value, because less severe toxicity can occur even at levels below that.

LC50 means, in short, that 50 % of the fish are dead in x-time, so you could make up a LC10, where only 10 % of the fish are dead in ther same x-time, which would be a lower level. Also, lower toxicities values can cause death over a greater time period, as it may take time, to lets say, damage organs at lower levels, where they can not be repaired but may keep them alive longer.
