Is this something I should see growing at a certain point in the development of my tank. What would be cause for coralline not to be growing?

Bobby, it takes time for this to develop. Normally you seed your tank with live rocks that has corraline already in it. Then you need to set your parameters straight starting with ALK then followed by CA. This needs to be stable. Then water flow.

Some people use Purple up and swears by it, and some says its just gimmick. I have never used it bedore. And like you i also dont have a lot of corraline in my tank, just in my rocks. That is because,i dont dose ALK and CA before. Just water change, since i only have softies and lps , they dont mind. But now that i recently setup an sps tank only but plumbed to my main tank, i started dosing. And this cause to have started the corraline in my tank.

Hope this helps

If you know someone with a well established tank that has coralline ask them for some scrapings. You can seed your tank this way. You can also add it by way of a piece of coralline covered live rock. These methods will speed up the development of coralline growth in your tank. The coralline must be introduced.

Hey guys thanks for the info!
i had taken some scratch'ns ,turned off my pump and attempted to seed( a month ago) guess this may just take some time as I'm not dosing my tank.

coraline eats up calcium and alk so you need to test and dose to keep your levels up if you want maximum growth. critters graze on corline also, anything that will scrape off rock can remove corline as its trying to establish.

ya know coraline algae is not all good...it covers more porous rock and block the biological filtration that happens beneath, is a pain to clean off surfaces, and depletes calcium and alk meaning you need to add more. I have some different shades from bright pink to purple and some really cool deep red velvet looking stuff, but honestly I wish my rock would just be all white...but that will never happen.

wait...its diy rock?

hmmmmm....got to wonder if that has anything to do with the corline not binding at the molecular level, at least for at first.

In my experience corline grows faster on aqrylic than rock...and faster on dark surfaces.....heck 1 inch vinyl hose for my chiller was completly coated purple inside of three months. this says something of how it binds molecularly.

I love coraline... I don't scrape the back of the tank and it has taken over, get something metal and just scratch at the coraline you do have and let it float around the tank. No need to turn the pumps off. So if you just keep your Cal level right and everything else it till grow. It is slow and wont be overnight.
