The design and engineering is awesome, but, they are a PITA! One grain of sand is all it takes to hang them up. Too tight of tolerances. I have installed them on several installs, and never again. They need to installed somewhere with easy access. Closed loups are great, but you need to have everything on true union ball valves. Sch 80 as well, and it gets costly in a hurry. But, if you like fiddling with stuff, they are right up your alley! J

I usually recommend MP40's or 60's and the Tunze Streams are real nice. I'm a dealer for both. If you want a closed loup, go with sch 80 bulkheads, and valves for every port, intake and returns. I don't run the big external pumps like Hammerheads, cause they throw too much heat in the water. I run the ATB's. My last closed loup install was with the biggest ATB pump, the Flowstar 4200. Ran one 1.5" feed, and 1.25" up to 4-1" ports. Flow is nice, but that tank has 2-MP60's on one end.

thanks again. when was the last time you used one. I undertand they have upgraded to a magnetic motor and it doesn't appear that the inner cam is that close of tolerance....do you think this may have adressed the problem?

They all have a magnetic motor, and I installed the last one about 14 months ago. Buy one and we will see. I am a dealer for them so I could drop ship you one, or 3? PM me if you want something, Jason

Iv'e had the OM supersquirt on my own tank and just sold two four way's from the tank I just broke down. If you must have a closed loop and want wave making action they are the way to go.

I would make sure if you do use one that you plumb it in so if repair is needed you can remove and hook pump back up while OM is being repaired. It may require some gate valves at outlets so you don't blow the bikinis off your corals when not using the OM:)

Schedule 80 valves have a really bad habit of being way undersized putting a huge restriction on the OM and pump, sched 40 valves with the correct orifice are a better way to go, only sched 80 bulkheads are really required this is a very low pressure application.

Please elaborate?

Not sure what there is to elaborate on, sched 40 and 80 even sched 20 all have the same O/D different I/D to handle greater pressures, we dont see 10psi in an aqurium , you could likely plumb with schedule 20 but you might just stand on it and break it, you would neve break it with pressure. the heaveir shedules especially in ballvalve are rated for high pressure but unfortunately they rarely use a full 1" orifice actually in the ball its self I have seen some as low as .780, this means that you would be restricting a 1 1/2 outletted pump by 50% if only 2 ports of the OM were open, using a version 3 drum when you were at a position where all 4 ports we getting partial flow, then, and only then for that short period would the pump expel all its potential.the balance of the time it would be severely restricted.

about 10 years ago I came home to a flood becuase for an unknown reason my sch 40 return line cracked in half along a 1 foot span. only cats were home the time. so yes there are very few actually high pressure systems in his hobby, but there are other reason to use he good stuff.

I am pretty sure that nothing you are running is high pressure. If it is then you are restricting it to much but even then the more restriction you have means more simulated head pressure and the pump just stops being able to pump. I may be wrong on that but pretty sure I am right, but then there is that chance, well maybe.

I run sch 80 for durability. A buddy dropped a rock on his standard bulkhead that was one of the ports for his closed loup. It cracked, and guess what? He lost the whole capacity of the tank. I advised him to use sch 80 bulkheads, but he said they were too expensive. The sch 80 bulkheads are bullet proof! If your worried about the ID then upsize to the next size up. Simple! I have never had a sched 80 fitting, valve, or bulkhead fail, and I have installed a bunch. I don't run much sch 80 pipe, but that may change. The point I'm trying to get across, is that closed loup plumbing is nowhere to cut corners. They are just as imporntant as the tank itself. Drived me bat crazy someone wanting to place their coral collection in a craigslist tank that is 10-15+ years old and wasn't a solid tank when it was new. Jason

I believe we use what gives us peace of mind unless its our first set up. Good points given both way's you can always up size sch80 gate valves if worried, i am using sch80 bulkheads, sch40 gate valves, and sch40 gray pipe. Sch80 has a nice look too:)
