I just purchased a yellow orange shoulder tang.I was watching him and I was just wondering why do tangs swim up and down the tank glass does anyone know what this behaviour is for.

From what I have seen with tangs, ( I have an Achilles) they are all a little psyco. Mine would swin in a circle and rub on a clam I had all the time.

Its probably exploring the tank.. Mine used to do that for a while and then stopped.. He now Explores the tank... They are a neat fish and are definetly nice... how long have you had the fish? If its just recent within a few he should relax.. just wanting to know his boundries.. Remember he came from unlimited room out in the ocean..

Acanthurus Versus Zebrasoma

Hi TolBoy I too have seen what you,MMkeeper and James have experianced.
I have 3 diffrent species of Acanthurus Tangs, Powder Blue, Tenneti, and a Atlantic Blue all three are very active and do crazy stunts in my tanks from swimming loops to swimming end to end as fast as they can.
Now my Zebrasoma tangs , Purple & Scopas mainly hang out and kind take it easy they seem to like to Chill:)

40 Gallon Kind of a small Tank

Tolboy here is some info your Tang do you have Plans on getting a bigger tank? This guy is a fast grower If confined It will be mean to any other fish in the Tank.
Orange Shoulder Tang - Acanthurus olivaceus

Maximum Size: the Acanthurus olivaceus grows up to 14 inches.

Minimum Tank Size: The Orange Shoulder Tang prefers a tank of at least 150 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim.
Diet: The Acanthurus olivaceus is a herbivore and likes to eat Dried Seaweed (best), marine algae, mysid shrimp, Spirulina, fresh seaweed, and other meaty treats.
Care: The Orange Shoulder Tang is a medium maintenance fish.
Hardiness: This is a hardy fish.

Range: Fiji, Hawaii.
General Notes: The Acanthurus olivaceus is a beautiful addition to any aquarium as an adult or juvenile. Smalls and some mediums are a bright attractive yellow and will morph into the normal adult coloration of gray on two halfs of it's body with a large orange bar at the shoulder above the pectoral fin. As most tangs, should be housed in a large tank as this fish can reach 14 inches very quickly.

I agree with apprentice. The bigger the tank the better for tangs. Most must have 95 or above. Anything below will stress them out and they can breakout with ick.
