In my new tank I'm gonna have a coast to coast overflow
also two 1 1/2" bulkheads for the overflows.
What is the BEST design for quiet but efficient overflow for my stand pipes
They will be exiting the bottom of the tank!
I was gonna use one for the regular overflow and one taller for emergency back up!
I have a sedra 1200gph return pump so about 900 gph after head loss.

I have a two standpipe system in my tank that is absolute dead silent. Use the primary (or larger) pipe with a GATE VALVE on the sump end. This does not need a durso top on it. Then use the second as a saftey drain for when the GATE VALVE gets out of tune. The secone overflow pipe shouldnt be restricted in any way. Done this way, there is no air getting sucked into the pipe making all of the noise. I tend to leave mine tuned so that there is just a faint trickle flowing into the saftey pipe. My tunze powerheads make more noise than my overflows and they are a very quiet pump to begin with.

Of course, Duane happens to be nearly deaf:lol::lol:

Seriously, his advise is always excellent!.
If it works for him, it is golden.

Awe, c'mon. I may be a carpenter but I can still hear. Actually too well in the case of high pitched background noises. Almost to the point being a freak about it. Well, I am a fish tank freak after all.

I'll try to get some pics up for you in the next day or so

Sounds like the Herbie Method. I've been looking at this for my 30g.

Where can I find inexpensive plumbing parts, like gate valves (slider), our Home Depot and Lowes are worthless. I'm following MyTee's lead here and going to drill my new (used) 120 for a closed loop!

well thats good I havea gate valve ordered and I was gonna tune it to be about 1 inch below the top of the back up (safety) but if you tune it to be trickling, I'll do that
Now should I have both on individual pipes going to the sump or could I put a "V" in AFTER the gate valve on the shorter one so I can have only one input to the sump!
Oh and how short from the top is your "MAIN"

For a coast to coast I would "T" them together to tune them in sync. I have to have two gate valves because the water entering my to overflows comes in different amounts depending on how pumps are positioned.
Also, I should mention, the only reason I keep water flowing through my saftey pipe is because the overflow run back up hill to the sump and the water in the pipe will become stagnant and sulfuric causing the skimmer to blow up when the pipe gets flushed of it. I learned that lesson one time early on and boy it stunk.
My main overflows are cut about six inches below the top of the overflow box. I found that I didnt really need them for the system to work properly but in the event of power outages I dont want all of the water from the overflows in the sump. It brings the sump up to levels that make me nervous. ;)

On another note, I have all of that life growing in there after only eight months and I have black covers to keep light out of them as much as possible.

finn I've seen that system before it's nice! but I've got pipes comeing out the bottom?
Trido thank you so one is about 4 inches shorter than the other. cool.
You don't have any mesh or anything over them pipes for safety??
I guess if something made it all the way to those pipes they WANT to be in the filter scok and the sump?

I have overflow covers. Detritous is the only thing getting into those overflows.
