I am considering buying a Mag-12 for my 60 gallon tank (to hook up a SCWD). I am worried about the overflow being able to handle this much water... Can overflows only handle what they are rated for? Or is it all a lie and it can handle much more. Also, is a mag 12 WAY too much for me?

You are limited by the overflows. You need to see what size bulkhead you have and that will determine the rate of flow.
Too much flow is a very subjective statement. Your tank may be fine if it is distributed well.

For a closed loop, there's no need to run an overflow in my opinion, you could drop an intake pipe down into the tank and then run that directly to the pump. (Intake and ouput always under water) If this is a switching sump return, then it becomes important.
As for flow, I'm in the midst of buiding my 50G system right now, and the water flow will be handled by two pumps, one Mag-7 as the sump return (and as a result pushing the overflow), and a Mag-24 as a closed loop pump to get the 40x+ system turnover that I want. It really depends on what you're planning on keeping.

I have the cpr 102 rated to 1200 gph on my 75, I have the quiet one 6000 rated to 1506 gph I had it figured right at 1100 gph at the 3 ft 10 inches it takes to get to my tank. I put a ball valve, (i open and close every week) and a true union in line. It works great. I mean absolutley fabulous. I do recomend the air lifter pump for 10$ that consantly sucks the air and a little water out of the top of the c-channel. I tested it for power off and restart. Flawless.
