Hello,

I am really new at the saltwater world and as such have lots of questions....smile. I have a friend with a big (8" across) green pagoda bowl looking coral and after about a week in his tank it produced small little growths that look nothing like the pagoda coral but it kicked out alot of them..(50+ over the past year) They look cool, they look healthy and they just wave about in the current. I wish I had a picture and will get one but was hoping someone could explain about the pagoda coral and what it is it produced.

Thanks,

Poorbob

Are these part of the coral? I'm picturing the coral when its polyps are extended, perhaps this is what you are referring to.

Here is some more reading on these corals: Family Dendrophylliidae

This is an example:

and another from our gallery:

Hope this helps a bit.

Hello Nikki,

Thank you so much...smile. In the top picture you show is what is in this tank I was referring to. But they are independent of the pagoda coral. there are literally 50 of these quarter sized base standing about 1-3" in height thru-out the tank on the walls, rocks, etc... Have you ever heard of that and will each of these turn into a pagoda cup coral? The "mother", for lack of a better term is about 10" across and has the little holes scattered about the top and he said that these were spewed from the holes.....any help would be cooool...

Hmm....I wonder if it is polyp bail-out? Interesting. I'll move this thread to Anthony's forum to get his input. (however, I think he is currently out of town). In the meantime, if you could get a picture that would be awesome!

Are you sure these aren't some kind of anemone or aptasia that you're seeing?
