I'm setting up a new tank. In the past I've used that film stuff that is blue on one side and black on the other for the background on my rear panel. I didn't like how stuff could get in between it and the glass  so I was wondering if I could paint it. Any recommendations on type of paint? I want it black. Or what are some other options/best solution?

Yeah, just paint it black!! It works good! Just mask off the sides & whatnot, & use spray paint (in a well ventilated area). We just used regular ol' spray paint on the backs of our two tanks. WAY better than that sheeting junk! Good luck!

Pretty much any spray paint will work, but I use krylon spray paint.
Just detail it like jag3534 said.

2nd the paint!!!! i did it to my 75 and loved it. then when i moved and wanted a different look i scraped it off when i clened the tank up before the set up. only took 15 min.

if you paint it black everything will show up though like all the little tube worms and stuff you have to scrape the back every couple of days if you wa that clean look
