i just want to add something. you said the tank was in wall and the back was in the furnace room. have you checked for carbon monoxide?

yes i found a picture of them on the 'net and it is a peanut worm.
and to chris and barb, i haven't taken any specific readings for carbon monoxide but there is a carbon monoxide detector in the room and it has never gone off.
