Oh Man..
I was in the area of a PetCo today so I ran in to see if they had anything for the reef Im setting up in a few weeks. Of course they didnt. But I was reading a paper they give away about fish. They had one for clown triggers and it said the Min. tank size for a clown trigger was a 30 gallon.

So I was walking around and my mom wanted an apple snail for her pond. She picked one out, and we couldnt anybody to come and bag it for us. So I go up to this kid and I was like "Do you know where I can find someone to bag fish for me?" and he was like "Sure I can..". He was a little slow...So he was bagging the snail and he had about an inch of water in the container with a 3" snail. I didnt want to be mean to the poor kid so I was like "Can you put a little more water in?". He said "Sure. I can do it up front". So he takes the container upfront.. And starts filling it with tap water. :shock:

Im glad they have a 14 day warrenty on their fish.. or else I would not have accepted it. I dont plan on buying anything at this place for a while. My mom wants me to get a job there because she thinks I could change some stuff around but I have a feeling that its not the people need to change, its the store itself.

There is nothing wrong with Petco

The problem is that people expect the emloyees to answer all their question and make all their descision for them. Then when something doesn't go right they catch the heat for bad descions that the consumer actually made. If you don't know what you're buying when you go into a store, you're probably not going to know what you bought when you come out!
Petco is a great store to buy dry-goods. If you buy fish after the initial set-up they should be quarrentined regardless of where you buy them.
Petco is a good company to be an employee at as well. They have good health benefits and a structured higherarchy to advance through. Most of the junior employees don't have as much knowledge as the people on this board but I've met at least one that has more. When Petco is slammed it ususally is along the lines of my fish died so I will never buy from them again. I live right behind a Petco and shop there all the time. Use some inteligence and you can't go wrong.
I say go to work for them you will learn alot about how to run a business on someone elses tab. Let them teach you how to keep the corporation afloat, then when you own your own business you can run it as you see fit.

Thats what my parents are thinking. Im going to be 17- and when college comes around I plan on majoring in business and minoring in marine biology. My dream for years has been to open a LFS. My parents think that if I get my foot in the door at PetCo, sooner or later Ill be a manager. They think that would be a good experiance for what I want to do. Im having a good time working at my LFS right now.. You have to be 18 to work at PetCo so maybe one day..

Very interesting my petco does not guarantee there saltwater fish even on the back of the yellow sales slip it states there is no guarantee on salt water fish I would be interested in anybody else's experience with petco guarantees practices.

Well, I dont know about their saltwater fish. I bought a freshwater snail for a pond and that was guarenteed for 14 days.

at 99% of all fish stores there is no guarantee for saltwater. The only time I've actually heard of this occuring is if you make a huge purchase (like a tank w/filter+, etc..) and the guy says bring it back if the fish doesn't work(like he's using the fish as a sales gimick) OR if you personally get to know the manager owner of a small shop(usually by spending lots of money there anyway)

At my shop.. All fish are guarenteed as long as you bring in the fish, and a water sample in a seperate container. We test the water and if you params are out of control we cant do anything for you. If it seems fine then we give you store credit.

I had a 25 gallon for my first tank a long time ago, and well...the entire tank almost went *poooof*.

but why would you add the PetCo water to your tank anyway? i never add tank water from fish i purchase. i acclimate the temperature then remove the fish with a net.

do most people add the water from the bag to their tank or quaratine tanks?

Matt - TerryB wrote an article about not using a net for fish. I'm not saying this is how water treated with copper got into Elmo's tank, but rather my response to your statement about using a net. I believe I have found my next poll question . Here is a link to the article:

interesting article. i wonder though if the risks of adding water from another aquarium out weigh the risks of netting a fish?

do most people catch and transport their fish using the bag method? how do you do it Nikki?

Yes I did not use a net, but rather poured most of the water from the bag. This was for a maroon clown i ordered, and they have cheek spines, which will get tangled in a net and can cause damage.

Matt - I use a net....I only came upon that article recently, so now I am rethinking the whole process. I suppose in some instances you may have to use a net.

Yes this is true there is copper in the water. There is a whole book (well ok not a book) stating how things are to be done in the Petco Company. I also work for them and I feel I have made somewhat of a difference in the stores health of fish.

PetCo Does not have a return policy on sw fish. It is usually stated in the aquatics dept with a sign. I have been with them for almost 4 years now and I have more seniority than the Store Mgr and 99% of the ppl working there but I guess All in All it isnt a bad job. It is like most jobs in Corp. America the poiltics suck but they are delt with,
