and as far as people "playing god"...good luck avoiding that.

not really the most appropriate place for such a statement really.
isnt it bad enough i have to read peoples sigs with their religious beliefs stamped on them??
like I care to read other reefer's beliefs on such private matters??

Breeding fish for desirable marketable traits has been going on for near 50 years. Its just like described above. you take the two with the most desireable traits and breed them, then the next two with the most desirable traits, and so on and so on. Then 10 or so generations later, you end up with a different looking fish altogether
