I have a red plate coral that we have had in our tank for about 8mos. It's 120 gallon tank. Water test are good, calcium is about 450 salinity is at .125. It looks like it is dieing. the white skeleton is showing more and more each day. Is there anything I can do? About how long do they live.

Have you been feeding it? They're pretty aggressive eaters that usually require supplemental feedings. HTH

I also have had a couple nice plate corals die, usually within 2 weeks of showing any symptoms. My remaining one is florishing now that I stuff a few mysis shrimp down it's maw every couple of weeks. Open brains and hairy mushrooms also now doing much better with feeding meaty foods, not just Chromoplex etc....

They really require multiple feedings per week to thrive. If you want good growth feed small meals every other day.

IME the best way to help a sick fungia along is to bulk feed it. Soak mysis in selcon or another vitamin supplement and feed it every day or twice a day if it will take in food. Keep it up until you see improvement and then you can put it on a maintenance diet.

To be quite honest I used to feed my Fungia quite often when I first got it almost a year ago... Since It ate one of my cleaners it will no longer Accept any frozen food... That was about 6-8m ago.. It is growing as is very healthy... It used to eat whole pieces of silversides about once per week... To me its been pretty hardy. I had it start to bleach out due to some pretty intense lighting and then colored back up... What kind of flow is it in? I would also try an Iodine dip as It might have gotten an Infection... Also what kind of lighting do you have on the tank?

BTW Welcome to Reef Frontiers...

HTH,
James

I moved this to the current forum as the subject is about a LPS rather than SPS type coral. Hopefully you will get additional feedback here.

Thanks everyone for your reply's. The tank has about 1400gph. The lighting is 2-250 metal halides 10,000 Ushio and 2 actinic white vho and 2 super actinic vho. I recently had a problem with the metal halide ballast decideing to quit one right after another so we went about three weeks with one metal halide. We just feed are tank 1 frozen cube of food everyother day alternating between formula one and formula two from ocean nutrition

Do you thaw the cubes? I feed mine blender mush but I thaw it and blast with a turkey baster. I think the cubes are ok if you target feed.
