plate coral swollen

alrighty i have this plate coral for about 4 months now and its always been kind thin but it would expand outwards and it always had little fingers looked completely healthy. i came home just now and its huge. its like 2 inches thick and swollen out wards ive never seen it like this before its huge? is this normal or is there someting wrong?

ok good. when i first bought it i put it in my tank and at that time it had been set up for like 5 months. and about 2 months ago i moved to olympia and up until last night when i got home at 1am it had alway pretty much looked the same it. it would get bigger around but never swell up and out it had me concerned. but anyways thank you for the information.

Fungia have the ability to move, one of the few corals with that ability. To move, they expand and retract their tissue. They can also expand their tissue to rid themselves of sand and debris that's settled on them. Your coral looks completely normal and healthy.

in the past I had a green plate that got pretty big (like yours pictured). Just in the last couple weeks my purple double mouth one (looks a lot like yours) got a lot bitter than what you have pictured.

Mine gets big enough to fit about 5 more of itself inside itself (confused?)


I would really like to know what is going on also, but I think it is a healthy thing. Also, Mine started moving a lot right before it puffed up.

It will be interresting to see if someone knows for sure what is going on here.

Have you ever looked at it at 1 am in the morning before? I would guess it might often look that way at night - a good number of my LPS get very 'poofy' and extend polyps to feed in the middle of the night. It's a good time to drop in some coral frenzy or other coral food.

yeah about once or twice a month i get home at 2 or 3 am on the weekends. and my friend will usually see the tank and checks it out under the moonlights. maybe its just finally happy

as you can see from the time stamp, I look at it often at that time of day. It is puffy more often in the dark than the light, but it is still does not seem to be enough of a trend. Another odd thing about my purple double mouth plate, it is so active with its moving back and forth. It used to sit in one spot. Now, I even caught it wedged between a rock and the glass with the mouth side on the glass. I wondered if it was eating tube worms or something. Something seems different but I don't know what.

i just have a purple plate not long ago,,first few days just tentacles and a bit flesh was out,,fed it the first time then after that everynight it puffs so big..like bloated,like yours..so i think when they got used to the surrounding and when theyre happy..thats what they do..

well a few days after that night i noticed parts of it fading. and now its all white. i think its dead

oh how long did you have it before the fading...im getting worried now too..mine puffs at night,last night i fed it and it ate,,,right now its in its normal size..

that's a bummer. Mine puffs and de-puffs all the time and it seems healthy as heck.
