I got a piece of LR yesterday that had these things on it. Can someone ID them and should I get trid of them or keep them?

I think the one is Bubble algae...is it bad?
Not sure on the others....aiptasia ? (I hope not)

Thanks!

Yep, First one is Bubble algae. You may want to remove rock and try to get bubble off rock then put back in or get a emerald crab. The second ones look like your troublesome glass anenomes (aitiptasia). You can shoot some kalk/RO water directly into them with a shringe and they usually dissapear.
Good Luck,
Ed

I agree with Ed. Another thing to try for the aiptasia is Joe's Juice...I've been reading more about its success lately.

Bubble Algae

another poormans way of getting rid of both is to start a syphon and scrape off with a razor at the bottom and suck out everything. it has worked for me with aptasia in the past. i would not recommend an emerald crab.......Crabs are Evil!

Nikki, what is Joe's Juice? It sounds like something that kills brain cells when hormones are running rampant from my good ole college days?

Who wants aiptasia

I know that NorthStarAquatics is looking for aiptasia to feed to his Berghia.

But if you must kill it you could go the cheap mans way and squirt it with a dropper full of boiling water directly on him. It has worked very well for me in the past.

Good point, Candy. I didn't think about finding someone that is breeding Berghia.

Ed, here is a link to Joe's Juice

Check with the sponsors, as I think a few of them carry the product.

the boiling water trick just does'nt work, i have seen one of my lfs do this and they swear by it but its funny thier tanks are still full of them. get the joes juice i have heard nothing but good things about the product.

I use the multi cure all for aiptasia and bubble algea. A mixture of 50% muriatic acid and hot water in a syringe with a sharp needle does the trick for both undesirables.

Aiptasia melt away when you chase themm into their retreat hole. inject a small amount into the bubble of the algea and poof they disappear!

:D

I have a friend that shoots red devil lye into them and melts them. He swears by it. Is it Safe? I have seen him mix the lye with water and use a shringe and shoot it directly into them...they dissapear really quick...It definitely works also..

My 2 cents:

My Meathod for killing aptaisia:

1 (newest meathod) buy 3 Berghia. They do great when you can see them.
2 (newer meathod) Joes Juice. Love the stuff. Accidentally dropped ALOT on a couple corals without any side affects. (although my BTA reacts everytime I use it)
3 Cover with 2 part epoxy, or super glue. Seal the little jerk and give him a tombstone.
4. Injections... never really work.

5 Scrap it off.... only if you want hundreds more. Any single cell left behind seems to produce more.

Good Luck

I have 2 unused/unopened bottles of joes juice. If you wanna buy it cheap or trade pm me. I ordered more than I needed and it worked as promised, good stuff.

Not trying to steal your thread, =)

RSD - Great first post!! Welcome!

Craig, I'm being dense here, but what is muriatic acid?

Muriatic acid is .......HCL or Hydrogen Chloride or Hydrochloric Acid

I don't think I'll put that in my tank at all. (a little paranoid)
I'll try the Joe's Juice when it gets here.

Thanks to all for all the great help !!

It is a caustic acid that kills on contact, completely dissolving the organism's tissue. I have used it for two years with no negative effecf on my tank. About $5 per gallon, enough to last a life time, at Home Depot. Very cost effective, eh?
