Hello to all...

I just want to collect some info on different salts reading out there. Can you please post your newly mixed salt readings? I dont mind if its the same as mine or already posted. Thank you.

Instant Ocean on RO/DI
CA = 350 (salifert)
ALK = 11.5 (salifert)
MG = (not tested)
SG = 1.025
Temp = 80

A couple weeks back I had some reef-club friends over, and we tested up a couple salts. Two separate batches of each, all bought within last 3 months from different places, three diff test kits on each sample.

I've got all the excessive data here: http://www.madisonreef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=364

But I do say ... no matter what my salt tests, test your own. Make it a regular practice with the beginning of every bucket ... it's only one test every few months, and a whole lot of peace of mind IMO.

These results aren't what I got off IO in the past, but as they're all seeming to change packaging regularly ... seems like formulations might be different too.

But here's the quick run-down:
Instant Ocean Batch 1:
1.0265
Calcium Average: 380 [366.7]
Alkalinity Average 12.6 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1380
Strontium: 4
PO4: 0
NO3: 0

Instant Ocean Batch 2:
1.0250
Calcium Average: 367.5 [356.7]
Alkalinity Average 12.53 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1250
Strontium: 10
PO4: 0
NO3: 0

Reef Crystals Batch 1:
1.0266
Calcium Average: 472.5 [451.7]
Alkalinity Average 12.8 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1435
Strontium: 0-3
PO4: 0
NO3: 0

Reef Crystals Batch 2:
1.0262
Calcium Average: 455 [443.3]
Alkalinity Average 12.6 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1400
Strontium: 10
PO4: 0.1 [likely due to unclean bucket/powerhead]
NO3: 0

Tropic Marin Pro Reef Batch 1:
1.0252
Calcium Average: 455 [435]
Alkalinity Average 8.7 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1400
Strontium: 0-3
PO4: 0
NO3: 0

Tropic Marin Pro Reef Batch 2:
1.0259
Calcium Average: 437.5 [421.7]
Alkalinity Average 8 dKh
Magnesium Average: 1300
Strontium: 0-3
PO4: 0
NO3: 0

For Calcium average, one test kit was factored out of the average [due to consistent low readings, about 50 points low]. Average of all three listed [in brackets after].

Do note, Strontium test is +/- 5 ... and seemed to be agreed that it's a problematic test. I would not call them conlusive results with this test kit, but that's my editorial opinion.

All salts were mixed using my RO/DI water, around 76 degrees, TDS 0.

Cesar - I'll post some results on mine next water change.

Please do!

We skipped on Oceanic as none of us had any that was recently purchased [all about a year old] and given we felt that maybe the others had recently changed forumlations - getting more recent samples was important for our testing IMO.

That, plus none of us were interested in using it. But, I'm probably going to suggest it again in the fall - another batch of testing, with some other brands. Build us up some more data to play with.

Or better yet, you find some folks in your reef club, get some brownies ready, and host a similar gathering. Was nice to have a few hours to kill with folks, nothing to do but talk reef, eat brownies, drink beer, and titrate.

Yeah I will post some Results like Monday or Tuesday.. I currently use Oceanpure and Its been very good so far... Looks and acts like Oceanic however the Mg and Ca is a little bit lower and more natural... Buckets have been stable from bucket to Bucket... And its like 20.00 per 150g bucket from Customaquatic.com

Great thread thanks for going to the trouble and posting for all of us . I use Reef Crystals . :D

I did not get the time over the weekend to sample, but here are the tests from a fellow reefer...

The range I got from testing the Oceanic:
Ammonia Undetectable (LaMotte Salicilate test method)
Nitrite_N Undetectable (LaMotte)
Nitrate-N 1 to 3 ppm (LaMotte)
Silicates 0.5 to 1 PPM (Salifert double checked with Hach)
Phosphates 0.06 to 0.5 PPM (Hach)
Calcium 480-530 PPM (Salifert)
Alkalinity 140 to 165 PPM (LaMotte) (2.8 to 3.3 meq/lt)
Magnesium 1320 - 1480 (Salifert)
Iodine Not detectable (Salifert)
Salinity 1.025 Refractometer
Temperature 78.5 to 79.1 Lab glass thermometer
Water heated with two 350 watt Won Bros Digital Titanium heaters.
Water Mix Color: Light Brown
