I put a gallon of kalkawasser in my refugium and a couple hours later my anenome closed completely up. Should I be worrid at all. He has looked really good the last couple days. Bubble tips all inflated and such. Is it bad to add a gallon mix of Kalkawasser after deluting in a 1 gallon jug for 20 minutes all at once? It kind of clouded the tank after I added it for awhile.

Please help.... I love my RBTA.

Here is a picture

You ought to test you PH to see where you're at...but I'm going to agree with wrassehole that your anemone is more than likely gone.

How big is your system? You are probably going to want to start making water for water changes, otherwise you're going to risk loosing anything else that you've got in the tank.

Kalk is something that you want to drip at a slow rate...I drip mine at 1 drip per 5 - 6 seconds, and I've got a total volume of 50 gallons in my system.

I agree with esmith, do a water change as quickly as you can get the water ready. test the pH, like was suggested, so you can monitor where it heads with water changes.

Let us know how things go....

Test you PH immediately! If it's over 8.8 - turn off your lights and make water change.

I don't think it should be extemely high even if you put 1gal of Kalk to 70 Gal total water system, but NEVER do this again. You should DRIP Kalk water into your sump, not pour it!

Post your PH level too. As for RBTA... it might still recover, but it really hurt it that PH shock :(

You just say kalk mix, How much kalk powder did you put in one gallon. It may be no big deal. The rbta is probably most sensitive to the ph swing/spike. If he starts to deteriorate you need to flush him. A dead rbta can really foul your system.

Agreed with the others....dumping kalk all at once is a good way to send pH way up...

Another good way to temporarily send pH back down is to pour a few cans of carbonated water (seltzer water) into the tank.....

While you are waiting to get the saltwater mixed up and to the correct pH, throw an airstone into your tank. The CO2 from the air will precipitate some of the excess Ca (which is driving the pH up) and drop the pH.

kalwasser should be dripped. ;)

reefs are very stable environments which barely fluctuate in water ph, temp, sg., quality hence the critters there are more sensitive then, say, critters in rivers and lakes.

As the Wicked Witch said to Dorathy.........

Ahhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhhhh Arggggggggggg Argggggggggggggggg

I'mmmmmmmmm Meltinggggggggggggggg oh my pretty, I'm going to get you, and your little dog too.........

Arggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh..

Multiples of Sadness.........

Big time snafu you made there. Hope things work out for you and it recovers. I think "its all over but the screaming and the shouting" for your RBTA though...not looking good.

Normally I mix 1 tbl spon of Kalk with a gallon of RO water and let it sit for several hours and then I drain the clear liquid under the crusted surface scum into my tank over a 4 hour period.

Keep us posted on how it turns out and if you can save your system....

I don't think we need anyone else to tell him it was a mistake. For the most part we agree that Kalk should be dripped or atleast only small amounts poured in at one time.

What I want to know (and I'm sure a bunch of you do too) is how everything it going. I am dying to know if everything is ok or not, though the effects on the anemone may not present themselves right away. Sometimes anemones will just wither away over a few months time when something traumatic has happened, or atleast that's what happened to the only anemone I have had (or will ever have).

i agree that we digged into him a little too much, however, weve all made our mistakes in th past. i remember when i use to use the poduct, then read the label after. being too late of course. half the fun is knowing what your doing when you do it. im the king at learning the hard way. trust me, i bet he'll never do that again.

Thanks for all the support. Everything looked perfectly normal today in my tank. I will surely never do that again. I guess I got kinda ahead of myself because I read to dillute 1 teaspoon in a gallon. I didn't really know that you HAD to drip it. I am ordering a Kent dripper monday. I attached a picture of my anenome to show that it looks good.

One more question. Do you guys with anenome's and cleaner shrimps have the cleaner try and clean the anenome. I just watched my cleaner shrimp pick all the bubble tips and the mouth.

Good news Mishikal, WC's in a case like this are always the best ways to get you out of trouble in water parameters problems. If your shrimp is doing that, it is definately rolling the dice

First, good to hear that things didnt go too far south on you in that little set back. Thats a real relief from where I am sitting!

Another suggestion, unless the tank is large, if you have a store that caters to reptiles, there is a pint sized dripper that works very well for just 5 bucks. I am kind of a tight wad when it comes to fun dollars too, so I made my own dripper with a 2 litter soda bottle, some air hose tubing and a air line valve. That works really good for me on my 135 gallon tank. Another thing I do is drip the kalk at night to minimize PH swings, as well since at night ones PH has a tendency to drop some. To my way of thinking, and I could be wrong, this helps keep things a little more stable water parameter wise.

As far as making a mistake...I think at one time or another we have all made a few - its an easy thing to do at times. I know I have sure made a few, some I would be too embarassed to mention. I just figure I have to chalk those mistakes up and let it be lessons learned....Thats the best thing about forums, you get to read about other peoples mistakes and can learn from thier mistakes hopefully before you make them, that way you dont have to "feel the pain" too, in the process.

Thanks guys.

Yeah that sounds good with the do it yourself kalk dripper. Did you use super glue to secure the airline in the 2 liter bottle? I have one of those extra little air regulators that would probably be really good for regulating water flow to.
