Started doing some preliminary plumbing and I have a question. Which would you suggest I use in my overflow, a Durso or Stockman Standpipe. What are the pro's and con's. I made both and I'll picture them here.

Both are ~5.5" Tall to go in a 6" deep External Overflow

My first ever PVC gluing =(

So far I know the theory behind the Durso and the Stockman but I wanted to know what everyone thinks about what I've made so far and what they'd recommend on a drain running about 500 GPH.

What kind of drain are you using? What GPH? What Size?

I have only ever tried a durso, and only 1 time at that. So far it has been silent and for 1.5 years, and is draining aprox 1200gph. I made mine from 1.5pvc.

I tried both and durso was quieter even with as many modifications as I could come up with for the Stockman. The Stockman has the advantage of using less space.

I use Durso's, and have seen tanks that use Stockman that are just as quiet.

I use a Stockman standpipe in my current reef tank. Since I had the return going through the overflow as well, I was not able to use a Durso.

The Stockman is as quiet, if not quieter than any Durso. I like the slim design.

I actually made several of the Durso's, everyone has a tolerable level of noise, I used several variants, heights etc. When I made the Stockman, hands down quieter, easier to make & takes up less room. What you can do is not glue the bottom tube into the BH., it isn't necessary, this way you can remove it for cleaning tweaking etc. I found in both test, the closer to the top ove the overflow the better but not too close.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Scotter,
Ya, I glued everything but the bottom, since I don't know the exact height of the overflow.

I don't think in the end there's a "fatal flaw" in either the durso or the stockman and it also doesn't seem as though there are any real complaints about either, so I think wait-and-see is the best policy to know which one will work better is in order here. Thanks again everyone!
