Pondering New tank

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

After spending some time explaining this to my better half, she had a pretty good idea. Our house was robbed a week ago and they broke our living room floor lamp. Well why not make it a free standing floor lamp.
This would mean downsizing it to a 10 x 10 cube. Put it on a tall (3 1/2 or 4 ft) dark stained red oak pedestool. Add a bent iron rod up the back and suspend a halide inside a glass tiffany lamp shade.

I like that idea Don! I was trying to brainstorm a few ideas last night but all I had was drizzle

BTW, will you try to make it look like a lamp? If so, maybe you can make your own lamp shade or atleast the underside out of reflector material...

I was looking on the internet last night and found some tiffany and mission style square shades. It appears at first glance I could fit a retro hqi reflector inside one.

I'll think like Scooty and say, you can always replicate a bulb with light hidden in the socket and pumps hidden in base :p

How do you like this. I know the wood needs to be red but I didnt want to spend to much time I still have home work

I decided to go ahead and do this project. If it doesnt turn out as expected I'm sure someone will want it. I'll start a actual build thread when I get started and leave this one for the clutter and ideas.

Here is what Ive come up with thus far:

Tank will be 1/4" glass 10" x 10" x 10" the glass should ready for pick up today.

Scooty seems to really like the LED's so that is what it will be.:) Still need more info on PAR bulbs vs a retro kit. Also need to decide just how many LED's.

Stand will be Red Oak done in a mission style stained dark or fumed depending on how much energy I have to put into it.

The over flow will be round clear acrylic the same diameter as a 3/4" bulkhead with a 3/4" herbie drain. No teeth, I decided that I would skip the fish and make my life easier.

The return will be a clear acrylic tube comming up from the bottom probably split two ways.

There will be no other flow. I'm not seeing any reason to have excess flow without SPS. There should be plenty from the return. The pump will be a Quiet One but the model hasnt been decided yet. I'm guessing a few hundred gallons an hour should be fine.

Sand will cover the bottom, just pure white aragonite should be fine and will hide the two bulkheads.

The sump 10x10 24" tall will house, heater, return pump and LR. The space is so small that the LR will be skewered and put on a vertical rotisery. This will let the pump to go at the bottom under the rock. The rock can be rotated for cleaning.

Cooling I'm convinced will need to be an Ice probe. Comming up from the bottom of the sump with the probe in front of the return intake.

Keeping with the DIY theme and the tiny I'll use little solid state timers to run the thing and probably a little solid state temp controller if I can find a good probe.

Not really much else to mention. I'll pick up the glass and silicone tonight and order up the bulkheads today. Should be a fairly quick and simple project.

Man, I've tried squinting my eyes, closing one and looking through the other, hanging upside down and all sorts of crap to see if I see a hidden picture but nothing  Looks like something you'd see in a psychiatrists office! :p
