Hi everybody. I know I said that my tank crashing brings a tear to my eye. So does all the support you guys are offering. I just got home from work. They let me off early. Im about to do a water change. I'll update you all in a few. I feel really blessed that so many of you are offering to do so much.
Brett

Brett, I called up your work and they said you've gone home. Called up your cell as well ;) but no ring.

I am not surprised by all the support you have received. We're here to help ya Brett. I have a day off tomorrow off work, and you're welcome to call me and I'll help anyway I can.

Don't worry about restocking the coral in tank. Much of the coral stock in my tank was given to me and I can easily fragment some to help start a new tank. You'll find most people who have been at this hobby more than a couple of years will help out. Just PM the people (like myself) who have volunteered when you are ready and you'll get a loadout.

Using calcium hydroxide (slack lime or kalkwasser) or calcium oxide (lime or "superkalk") is a good and reasonably inexpensive way to provide balanced buffering of carbonate and calcium for your tank. You just misunderstood the application. Addition of a saturated solution of limewater (kalkwasser), and even worse lime solids, places a high demand on the system to take up CO2 from the atmosphere. If the gas exchange in your system cannot keep up the pH will begin to climb. In an "overdose", the the pH spikes sharply up, fast enough or high enough to start killing the tank.

Since several hours have elapsed since the overdose, its likely that the pH of the tank has come back down to non-lethal levels. Doing water changes now and in the near future will help with the organics released by the die-off. Frequent changes of small amounts of activated carbon ( 3-6 tbls per 50G tank volume is my ratio) will also help.

Another effect of this accident may be to make your powerheads or pumps prone to seize due to rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate onto the impellers. This can be seen as a hard deposit if you take the pumps apart. Running these pumps in a bucket of plain white vinegar (available by the gallon at the grocer) is a safe way to remove these deposits.

Anyway, you've made the material investment in the hardware, and you still have that. Restocking the coral or re-seeding a sandbed (if you use one) should not be a problem with what has been volunteered. There may the expense of restocking some rock for new seed, dependant on just how hard you spiked the tank. Just keep your circulation up, do those water changes, use some carbon and give it a few days. You may change your mind about shutting it down. I'm sorry for your difficulty and hope its not as bad as it seemed. Good luck.

WOW Brett, sorry to hear about this. I had a similar incident when the valve i was using to drip kalk came loose and dumped a couple of gallons of kalk mix in ab out 5 minutes. All of my acros rtn'ed. If I had thought about it I would have asked some friends on here to help. You have gotten an amazing response from some really generous people. I hope you take them up on it and that everything will make it. At the very least, dont give up. I now how it feels to see your tank decimated. Hang in there and have faith. Starting over shouldnt be so bad, now you have reeffrontiers and lots more experience then when you started.
Good Luck
Rachel

You guys are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope everythings ok,give us an update if at all possible. If Mojo made it over, you can rest assured you are in good hands. Good luck man

I am with everyone else. Dont give up!!! We will help you get back onto your feet, don't worry. Let us know soon if anything made it thru ok?

Yep. Same here. I'm sure I can get you some corals to start you back up if you need them. Just give me a PM and let me know what you need to get your heart back into it. Your tank will be bak in shape in no time.

I was just checking Transit time for UPS ground since I am Right below you in Oregon and It comes up as 1 day in transit... If you have stuff that dies I would estimate I could ship ya a few frags of SPS to get you back on your Feet... Shipping would be about $10.00 - $15.00 UPS ground which says its only 1 day in transit... I am pretty broke so I wouldnt be able to cover shipping but if you or someone wants to cover shipping I would be more than happy to toss a couple frags your way...

Went to Brett's place around 5:30 pm. Brought also some 20 gallons of water. Mixed some new salt, throw in heater and a mag 5 to mix.

I must say that some dont look good. Specially some monti digitatas. Zenias melted. Fishes are really stressed out. Zoos are all closed. Candycane are excreting stuff. One BTA melted also.

We will see tomorrow. We need test kits specially for Calcium and Alk. Also looking for spare overflow if you have some that you need to sell or give away.

Fishes are doing fine I guess except for the six line wrasse.

Thanks.

Katchupoy (Cesar) came by and we did a 20g water change. What we figured is that the PH went as high as it possibly could have gone, and was back on the way down by this evening. The sixline was sleeping face down tail up., I couldn't see him breathing but turn out hes ok. So far it looks as if all I have lost is my Stylophora and possibly galexia. All the fish are breathing VERY heavy but are still moving around. I'm hoping for the best. I couldn't have done it without the help of Cesar. I will let you guys all know how things are tomorrow morning. I appreciate all your kind words.
Brett

Thanks Cesar!

Brett - sounds like things are looking up a little bit. How does the tank look today?
