So I sat down to work on the posters and the image we have that was used for the cards will not work, the resolution is too low to expand to poster size. To get an image off the web of the quality needed for even a small poster will cost us. I am finding higher quality images starting at about $15

Let me hear your ideas.

Better start shopping........

Ill send over a few of my better pics for you to play with if you want to try them.
Also, how big are you thinking of making the posters? Im thinking 16" wide by 24" tall. Alot of our LFS dont have alot of wall space.

Okay here is the low down-My son created the artwork for the cards (I still need to get Vicki some info about his business so she can post to the website the promised advertising he did it for) He is good at Photoshop and I am not.

I would like to propose if we really want these posters that we hire him to do the artwork. It would take me hours and hours to do it myself and I just do not have that kind of time. If someone else would like to do it then go for it. I know my son will not be cheap, but he will be quick and likely charge by the hour (took him about an hour to do the artwork for the cards, took me 3 hours to figure out how to fit it to the printers template and that only was because after messing with it I asked my son for help and he showed me how in just a minute or 2)

In addition to paying my son we would need to buy the rights to whatever photo is used.

Yeah trido I think the size I was told before was 18" x 24". I will check with the printer to see what a stock size in that area would be.

Kris, do you mind me taking a small stab at it first? I am not good with these kind of stuff but can probably find friends who can help me?

Do we have a basic template for poster?

Go for it, just keep in mind that photoshop files are going to keep our cost down at the printer, if it is not photo ready there is a $40 set-up fee.

I just spoke to my son, he said for me he would do this at half of his regular fee so it would be $50/hour.

Kris, so we will keep him as a backup (I will get it PhotoShop). Quick Questions:

1. How much time will he take?
2. How much we it cost to buy the rights?

Do, we have a template to start with or should I start from scratch?

No template yet. lamcards.com is who we used before. Though I struggled before my son showed me how to easily copy what we had to the template (it is my ineptness that took so much time) so I do not think you need the template to start. Just create your work on a canvas of 16" x 24" and if it turns out that their template is a slightly different size it is just a matter of "select all" "free transform" and stretch to fit (see I know how now!)

My son estimates at a 16" x 20" (common stock size) poster about 2-3 hours. I was finding photos on-line starting at $15.00 for single use. It just depends how you want to use it, warning there is free stuff out there but it is low resolution and does not look good at all when you expand to poster size.

This is what I came up real quickly. After doing this I realize I would like to edit the pic before adding text. Like recoloring the pectina behind the lower writing and possibly adding a tang above the PSAS text. What do you think. MY wife is working on another version of the same pic in word format.

Duane

i think white text might be better for the lowest section...

I agree, unfortunately, the coral is oversaturated in the pic and no matter what color of text I use its hard to read right there. The green was simply the most visible. By far not my first choice of color. Yuck.

Looks good Trido. See I just need a couple years then I can start using shots of my own tank for these projects!

Can you just move the lower text down below the light colored coral?

Nice work Duane and Mrs. Duane :). I like the one you sent us on email.

Kris, I think I have Photoshop CD lying somewhere (back in school, we used to get it for $5). I will see if I can find it and we can convert it to PDF file from there.

Nice work Duane....

Please do run a spell checker on it though. :D

Vicki:)

Whats the problem with meberships? Its a new slang ya know....

I will see if I can find it and we can convert it to PDF file from there.

Why? Kris stated above that anything other than jpeg would be an extra set up fee. Robin had to do some hunting to convert it from ms/word to jpeg. PDF conversion would have been easy. I agree, though that her version is nicer than mine.

Bob suggested that the bold type be a litter smaller in Robins version. What does everyone else think?

One thing I keep telling myself.. This is an informational poster, it doesnt have to be a perfect resolution or expensive. If we can get these out to our LFS cheaply and get a feel for how they do for us, maybe next year we can get a higher quality pic with less blur.

Just thinking out loud here

Yes I am pretty sure a pdf file would cost more. A jpeg should work. The file I send was a psd (Photo shop).

Good point Trido about not worrying about the quality as much. That is where I was hanging up. My son has been teaching me both photography and using photoshop and lightroom and he is a perfectionist (he needs to be he is trying to make a living with his camera and editing skills). I will develop a photo I have taken and show him and he will say well if it were me I would . . . and when I make those adjustments it looks so much better!!

Well, what does everyone think? Should we print up a single prototype with Robins version and bring it to the October meeting for everyone to see in person?

I would have to say, just get them printed since they will help the membership and the sponsors.

So I guess thats one vote, well two if you include mine that the posters are fine as long as their not blurry when blown up.

Yeah, we need to see what is going to happen when it gets blown up. We probably can get something like this done through kinkos. Trido do you have the time to burn that to CD, take it to kinkos, have 1 printed at actual size and then, if it looks good to you, have the copies we need printed? Probably the easiest way to get a proof and then prints.
