Power heads use'm or lose'm?

I read on one site that power heads are not a good idea to use in the tank because of electrical problems they may have. It said instead to use pvc hidden in the rock work and conect it to the sump is this true and if so what is the best way to do this?

power heads do wear out and a lot of times "leak" voltage into the aquarium. heaters can do the same thing. the only way to prevent this is with a mag drive external pump. having said this, many people still use various types of power heads with good success. there is still a possibility of the same problem with heaters it the sump, but less likely. the best thing is to use good quality new heaters- not that much money- and good quality new or used pumps, whatever type you prefer. with power heads it is easier to use a wave maker and you can aim them where you want, but the less expensive ones have a small diameter/high velocity flow pattern which is not the best for some animals. figure out what you want in the tank and then provide the best environment you can for them! good luck and have fun! if you get more specific on your tank and desired animals we can give more specific advice.

A grounding probe is also a good idea and will help with stray voltage. They are also inexpensive.

I have a closed loop as well.And still run a Rio 800...But i have heard of some tanks with a 10,000 gph .Now thats flow...:lol:...Im running about 3,000 gph and am happy.

Here's a link to how I hid/did my closed loop. I've got just over 5,000 gph total in my 75 gal. I'm one of those trying to hit that 10,000 gph mark Just scan through the thread to see the changes and the photos...

Me???(LOL) Yeah man...If you look on the link, I changed the plumbing coming down to flex pvc and changed the lockline flare nozzles to straight nozzles and it had tons more flow pressure coming out! If you aren't referring to me, just pretend I didn't reply

I had maxi jets for years with no problems, & a few others, every now & then you need to clean them, soak in vinegar if necessary the rinse & clean well but these things can last a real long time. Nothing wrong with a good external pump in a closed loop either or any combination. Remember this about problems with anything going into water, use GFCI's on them & every cleaning inspect them throughly for worn or cracked housings or the body parts. inspect the wires also, this will prevent most problems mentioned. The better you keep records & maintain your equipment the better they will perform.
