Thank gawd I bought a generator when I was in the planning stages of my tank 2 yrs ago!

I have used it on 4 occasions now! Have been without power since 6 am.

If you don't have a generator, I would strongly suggest you get one. I would consider it a priority item just as your pumps are.

Jeff, sorry to hear about lack of power, but good to know you have a generator.

IMO, I would go one step farther. A generator should be included in your budget along with all other equipment. To me, I treat this hobby as an investment, and the generator is one way to protect that investment.

Keep yourself warm as well as the tank Jeff. :D I need you to keep the supply line of smoked pulled pork in operation.

I didn't follow this advice until the big power outage. Now I have a large one and am working to get a transfer switch installed because I don't like having 6 extension cords running around.

Last time we tried to slow cook pulled pork I got home and was all excited to have pulled pork and found out that the stupid digital slow cooker reset when the power went out I was so mad! Our power has only been out for like an hour or two at the most in the last five years so I haven't invested in a generator.

Great advice, even though mine has sit idle for about six years. Still a big comfort just knowing its there if needed.

Cheers, Todd

I've fired up my Generator three times this years. Christmas day was my longest haul to date in this house (six years) at 20 hours with no power. A Gen-trans-switch is a must if you plan to be in the hobby long term. MY 2000 watt honda helps to keep my reef tank, FW tank, refrigerator, lights, computer, and TV running during the local black outs.

A happy wife and son more than make a generator worth it. :)

Must agree a transfer switch is a must. Also fire up your generator every couple of months to make sure it will work when you need it and use Stab-il in the fuel for long term storage

I bought one before any livestock and needed it for 4 days this year. learned somthing real cool too with the power out and only using the generator for fish tanks, fridge, and a few lights. My fish tanks keep my house above 72 degrees! my furnace has yet to kick on this year!!!

After we installed our 8k auto start genny it was almost 2 years before it fired up for an actual power outage (it starts itself and runs a self test periodically). Then this year it ran for almost four days, sure was nice, at times I would forget we were dealing with a power outage :) The auto start is really nice, it comes on so quickly you hardly realize you lost power, usually we wake up trying to figure out what that humming noise is (you can just barely hear it in our bedroom).

An auto Start generator is definitely in the plans for our next house

I have never been able to understand how people can spend tens of thousands of dollars and loose tanks because they refuse to spend $1k on a decent generator just boggles my mind.... The Honda EU's are quiet, reliable and very fuel efficient and can be had on CL under $1k

Make sure if you are using a transfer switch that you have a disconnect from the main grid, if not you can back feed into it and electrocute a linesmen that is not expecting power in a line when there is because you are back feeding it
