Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I just got 4 1 inch bulk heads cause I'm getting both tanks drilled with 2 holes instead of 1 just for bac up incase 1 gets clogged or something

Just to clarify - it is the sumps you are drilling, correct?

And you are drilling so that the two sumps can be connected together?

Are you still going to have the two return pumps (one in each sump) and just using the connection between the sumps to keep the levels even?

If all of the above is correct, then the 1" bulkheads should be fine.
Drilling with the correct bit is easy - I prefer using a drill press, but it is not completely necessary.

If I were doing this, I would connect the tanks using flexible pipe (spaflex), and use a true union so the sumps could be separated and possibly removed for cleaning/future modifications.

yea just the sumps and not the main are gonna be drilled thats right!!!

dont worry burning ill have pics real soon!! i promise i think ive kinda over did it with pics thus far so im cooling off a bit but plan to come bac full force!!!

So will i be able to run 2 pumps now that they are both connected i didnt know that that would be awesome!!!

i didnt think it was possible cool

hey krish thanks for the out side skimmer idea but i can my skimmer that high cause its really tall i may have to sit it in the very back of my tank up high on something what im worried about is setting the big power head up to push the water to my skimmer the drainage should be a piece of cake

thanks james im gonna go check your link out right now!!

yeah ill probably have to do some thing like james idea is but id like to keep using the same pump

its like a big 802 aquaclear pump its gonna be kinda hard to plump i may just have to get some long tubing like in james pictures!!

thanks for the ideas could have never of did it without you guys!!

Yeah, the reason why it would work is because, now your 2 sumps will be working as one, so once you don't exceed the gph on your overflow you'll be fine. If one pump happens to fail, your overflow will only drain what is pumped into the tank so there would be no issue there at all. :)

Yeah, you'll just have to make sure you have enough "pump" to feed the skimmer the proper flow it needs to function properly, but with alot of skimmers, where the water returns from it (where it drains back to the sump) is equally important that it is allowed to drain without any restrictions which is why you'll have to raise it so the water can fall back to the sump and not try flow upwards :)

hey dnjan I for got to mention yes I do plan to use a union a flexible tubing on my sumps for later modifications thats a good idea

I'm also so glad you guys mentioned that I could use two pumps that made my hole day cause I was thinking I could just use one thats really the light at the end of my tunnel after finding out I had to get my tanks drilled I'm not really open minded when it comes to alot of suggestions and I'm really surprised that I'm going through with this one but now I'm really glad I did

Now comes the hard part can I borrow the 90 bucks its gonna cost for all 4 holes krish... LOL

1 question if I can't use my 802 aquaclear for the pump to get the water to my skimmer would a SEN 500 GPH return be ok???

I think the 802 should be ok but just wondering
thanks

LOL!When I talk to Rob later tonight (from Premium Aquatics), I'll tell him to lend it to you :p

About the skimmer, couldn't say. Not at all familiar with that skimmer

You will not be happy with a SEN500 as a return pump. The smallest SEN pump I would use as a return is a 700. My son's 20-gal has a SEN700 as the return.

don't know if I know rob from la or not but I'll be waiting and expecting that credit LOL

Yes djnan thats why I was gonna use the sen as a pump for my skimmer but I don't think I'm gonna have to now so thats cool I may use it in a closed loop though

You should know Rob...He's dealt with you a few times, but no longer works there. Started a new job Monday gone :)
