Are there any cons? Seems like most of the setups I see in people's houses have lots of LR in the sump. My sump is naked (except for detritus on the bottom  ). It is a pretty low-flow sump as almost all the flow in my display comes from my tunze nanostsreams.

I imagine this is to improve the bio-capacity of the system, and maybe you don't need so much LR in the display if you have some in your sump? Does it also form a breeding ground for pods? What about the drawback of detritus depositing underneath all that rock?

Are there any downsides of doing this?

Jan,

I think you have already stated both the Pro's and Con's of having Live Rock in your sump.

Pro - Improved bio-capacity of your system, with the possibility of using less in your display.

Con's - Having Live Rock in your sump, you won't be able to clean the detritus that developes on/under all the rock.

My personal feelings:

I don't like the idea of something that will trap that detritus in my sump. Trapped detritus leads to more polution of the total water column, which is what I try desperately to minimize in the 1st place.

Hopefully, you'll get some more ideas here also.

Yeah...I hear you. I've got to get that detritus out of my sump. I bought a Fluval 350 with vaccum attachment for that purpose but I haven't set it up yet.
