What is the best Protein skimmer for a 70 gallon tank?

What is it that I should be paying more attention to when I am looking?

Name brand?

There are so many to choose from, octopus for one is a good, ASM Euro Reef If you have the money, Bubble master, another but expensive one. Maybe skimmerwhispher will chimp in on his thoughts of a good skimmer for your size tank.

I echo what Scooty said...If it were me, Euro Reef, ASM, Octopus would be my first 3 choices. Not too heavily priced and great skimmers :)

Thank you all just sent an order for a Euro Reef 100........WOOHOO....I am so excited....it looks like a nice one...and simple too.........Thanks a bunch guys

Skimmer question

I just bought an ASM Mini-G in-sump skimmer that I bought for my 92 gallon Oceanic (All Glass) reef tank. When I plug the skimmer in, it immediately fills the collection cup up (within 2 minutes). The water in the collection cup is crystal clear, as is the water in the aquarium.

I've tried adjusting the skimmer to raise and lower the water level, but it still fills the collection cup within 2-3 minutes.

The manager of the LFS where I bought the skimmer told me that it will fill the collection cup up once or twice before it starts to work properly, so I tried emptying the cup when it filled. After 30 minutes of emptying the cup every few minutes, I finally shut the skimmer off.

The water tests give the following readings:
amonio 0.0
nitrite 0.0
nitrate 20
salinity 25
phosphates 0.5
pH 8.4

My sump is an Oceanic (All-Glass) sump, with bio-balls, a sponge filter, and a return pump.

The water is crystal clear.

Any ideas why it's filling the cup up so quickly?

How deep does the skimmer sit in the water? It should only be submerged from 6"-8".

AND FWIW, in the future you will get better, more detailed responses for your questions if you start your own thread addressing your specific question rather than highjacking someone elses thread from an unrelated topic. Or for that matter, do a quick search for ASM mini G and see what you come up with.

Hope that helps

Also move the stand pipe down some. This is the pipe that the water will exit the skimmer from. Moving this up or down will adjust the skimmer output. From what it sounds like you might have this to high.

Also follow Trido advice on starting a new thread to get answers.

The skimmer is sitting in about 4" of water, which completely submerges the base that contains the pump. Maybe I'll try putting more water in and seeing if that does the trick.

And, FWIW, I'm sorry for "hijacking" the thread. I thought this was a thread for all sorts of skimmer questions. Sorry if I offended.

That should be fine. Have you tried moving the stand pipe down.

FYI: No offense in the Hi-jack. We just want to make sure you get answers to your questions. Sometimes these threads get pretty long and your post might get buried in the other responses. If you continue to have problems start a new thread so we can get this figured out.
