My friend is setting up a tank with a sump/refugium in his basement bellow the tank. He is looking for a return pump that will pump 600-800 gph with about 10 feet of vertical head. I was just curious if anyone could give us some ideas of pumps that would be good for this purpose.

Iwaki pumps are great!

I would guess the Iwaki 40 would work for you, you might even have to put a valve on it to tone it down.

I like the Iwaki's, but to be honest, take a look at the Pan World pumps if you're looking at the Iwaki's. The Iwaki chief engineer left and began to make Panworld pumps. The performance curves are very similar, and the Panworld's are significantly less epxensive than the Iwaki's.

Iwaki's put out alot of heat. Something to consider when setting up the system.
