i have started a 180 gallon reef and have put a small yellow tang and after that a medium size purple tang. I would like to add another yello tang. Do you think i would be able to do so? the tangs have been in the tank for 2 weeks now. will i be successful in introducing a new yellow tang?

some people say put odd number of tangs. But I have four so if u add them at the same time it would be ok but at some point they will go after each other. Purle tangs are more aggressive so just watch your purple tang before u put another one in.

One of the problems you have is that you added the two tangs already, and they are of the same species, therefore have the same body type. If you want to add more Zebrasoma tangs, I would suggest adding more than one, and making them larger than the tangs you already have. In a standard 180 tank (6 feet long I believe) you will realistically only be able to add 2 more, assuming they are the only fish in the tank. They will otherwise begin to squabble for territory and fight.

What all do you have in the tank right now, fish wise?

I agree with Maxx.

I have never seen scientific proof that an odd or even number of tangs theory. The problem is that you've added tangs with the same body type, which is what will promote the agressive tendencies. I personally dont see anything wrong with adding another yellow tang if you are prepared to remove the purple tang if he starts acting up.

If you add another yellow tang I would make him the same size as the other one you have.

I suggest larger on the next tang because it will be newly introduced...and a larger tang wont be picked on as much.

Where in Honolulu are you Bojangles? I use to live in Waipahu when I was kid. Worked at Coral Fish Hawaii.

They've only been in there 2 weeks. I think the purple will see a larger tang as a threat and go for dominance.

Right now I'm in the sand box so all my stuff is in storage. When I go home in a few weeks, I'm probably going to move to Pearl City. I love to go browse in Coral Fish Hawaii!! I'll be in the market for a new tank when I get back and I cant wait!

Thank you all for the info. I have a red flame angel a green mandarin and a yellow watchman goby.
