Welcome to RF!!! :D As for the Purple-up, I went through a bottle before and had nice coraline growth as a result. Never noticed anything bad resulting from using it either...Just nice coraline growth. Since then, I have swithced to a 2 part supplement (B-Ionic) to maintain proper alk and calcium levels and now, water changes alone do the trick. The Purple-up is pretty good stuff though to promote coraline growth if that's what you are after IMO. Hope that helps and hope you enjoy the forum:)

Welcome to RF Jeff. :)

OH-!!

Its a buffer, I use it but it wont seed coralline. I bought all base rock for my tank and I still don't have any coralline after 8 months (3 with 1/2 dose of purple up).

I use purple up, but you have to have some coralline on your rock to start with. I have great color on my rock now. I am very happy with it.

So If I understand this correctly, If you put in one rock that is seeded already into your tank it should then spread faster if you use the Purple up?

Thanks

Jerry

Purple Up is a calcium based product. It will speed the growth of coralline algae. Dripping Kalk will do the same thing and it's cheaper. I used Purple up in my first reef tank set up. I'm not sure if my tank just reached the stage where coralline had the proper environment to grow or if the Purple Up actually helped. I do know that it did grow quickly. I also used half the dosage recommended and only used it about 3 times a week.

I have had the best coralline growth in all my tanks but I also think some of that is due to my lights. I drip kalk. every night and can daily see new spots of pink coralline. Most of my rock is covered in purple coralline.

as much as i want to use it,

for 60 bucks a pop a bucket, im sure the pro reef will take care of me

Corraline will spread fast if your water chemistry is right. Purple up just helps you do that.

Yeah...Premium Aquatics sells it for about $14. I know they sell the huge containers of them as well which is what Jon must have seen:)

product of the year

It does a whole lot more than grow coralene algae.Agreat product that will increase the odds of a new to,or the just want cool fish type of hobiest. One cap per fifty gals every dayis something that is simple enough for anyone to do,with no need for buffering or kalking orany other thing , when done by someone who either doesn't understand a calcium test or in most cases doesn't own one will acheive success with little risk.

excsessive amounts of any substaince introduced in to a closed inverment with out monitoring that substanice could result in "overkill"

who was it the other week who was saying something about there Ca, being at like 700 or something,

dumping anything in your tank with out checkin the effects daily (or untill you know the ruteain) is asking for a problem of some sort IMO

I agree...One cap full may be too much for some tanks and may do nothing for others. It may not be much of a risk, but still you'd want to test IMO:)

I remember Boomer writing about this stuff, use it too much & it will flop your balanced system, test test test, for once I agree with burning2nd dood!
