What is the recommended quarrantine and/ or treatment for newly acquired corals before putting them in the main tank? (Softs, LPS and SPS). thanks, Bob

Treatment? none. Best thing you can do for them is quiet observation, both day and night. More commonly, the pests your going to be most concerned about are nocturnal. Once/if you find something, then look for the most appropriate treatment/course of action prior to acting on it. Doing something without cause can be more damaging than doing nothing at all.

The QT should be cycled (very important), bare bottom, use eggcrate to elevate off the bottom, standard heater, basic lights (nothing special dependant on species) and offering the proper environment for the species your holding albeit temporarily. Leave minimum 4 but preferabley 6 weeks before adding to the main display. If a zooxanthellate, ensure to properly light acclimate once transfered.

is a fresh water dip or hyposaline treatment useful ... i think i've read about this before somewhere? thanks for the advice.

Hyposalinity treatment should be used for fish only, as it would be extremely stressful on corals. There are a few instances where people use a fresh water dip for corals, but only when finding parasites. Depending on the type of corals you are acquiring, I would thoroughly inspect them before going into QT, and watch them closely while in QT. As an example, on zoanthids, you want to look for things like small white spiral egg cases, sundial snails, and zoanthid eating nudibranchs. For acroporas, you want to look for things like red bugs and acro eating flatworms. For montiporas you want to look for monti eating nudibranchs. There are non specific things to look for, as well, such as Convolutriloba retrogemma flatworms (sometimes referred to as red planaria flatworms).
