Quarter size BTA??? Huh?

I bought a kenya tree a few weeks ago at Coral Beauty. It came on a small rock that looks like it has small bubble tip anemones on it. The tentacles (or whatever) can be long and thin or short and bubblish. Its a dark maroon color and likes to eat brine shrimp so I started to directly feed them... They dont look like antipastia (I think those might have hitched a ride too. Might have to borrow a peppermint shrimp from coral beauty if so.) I'll get a picture but Im sure it will be fuzzy. Anyone got any ideas?

I introduced these guys when the water quality was pretty crappy (like 30-40 ppm nitrates). I thought that would kill anemones.

Also, is there some unspoken rules for a LFS to give you some stuff to take care of antipastia if their coral rock introduced it to your tank?

i would say 'no' just due to the fact that you should examine the rock before you place it in your tank and remove any nasties. either quaratine it for a while or something.

It is a anemone, but most likely from you discreption it is a majano. I would verify it and if it is superglue over it. Does it look like this?

Should I kill these little guys? They seem content to just stay where they are and they look cool. Will they become pests?

they can multiple quite quickly so yeah they can get somewhat out of control. you can still get rid of them though. some people actually use them as filtration in their fuge or main tank.

My daughter started out with one on a small rock from Coral Beauty and last count was 30. We are working on here tank and they are gonna go; they haven't spread beyond the rock they are on so I think we will toss the rock. We thought they were cute in the beginning.....

It would prbably behoove you to get rid of them ASAP. Once they catch on, tjey are kind of like bunnies, you will have a problem on your hands. Get a fresh bottle of Joes Juice and slam them.

I have had a single in my tank for 6 months now, hasnt multiplied, but probably is best to remove it-

If you can get the rock out, a pocket knife works great. just make sure you get all of it.

FWIW in regards to your comment about high nitrates and hoping to kill the pest anemones...

I had written in one of my past posts how all our stock was killed in our recent move. what I didn't mention is that we purposely pulled all our rock out of the water and left it out of water for two days (knowing we would have to recycle), because we simply could not keep up with our aptaisia problems!

Well after two days dry, you can imagine the one creature to have lived on our rock was the Aptaisia... Nothing kills them, they're like mini terminators and we've tried it all!

At least now there is nothing in our tank (other than a few remaining aptaisia), so that we can deal with it properly and not worry about hurting other stock.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I bought some extra snail shells for my hermits and one of them had an aptasia. I took it out of the tank and put it on a window sil for a week. The shell turned white due to the coralline dying off on it but so did the aptasia.

One thing that has worked for me is a bbq lighter. If you can take the rock out. turn it upside down over the sink, take a philips screwdriver and wallow out the hole the aptasia is in. Then burn the area black. Rinse with old tank water and put that side down. I have never seen one come back from that. Kalk paste usually works but sometimes I have a tendency to go a little overboard. Steve

I had several Majano come in on some live rock I got. They were only about dime size though. I sucked them out with a turkey baster on a whim...worked great.

Dang has thousands of these guys in his tank and then all the sudden the ALL died odd without explanation. Almost as if they grew so many they used up their primary food source. I would definately try to exterminate it while it is under control.

I have some of the Kent Marine super buffer, will that work if I wet it and make it into a paste? Would that kill the pest anemones?
