So if the power goes out my 10g sump will not hold all the water from my display.. Could i drill the sump while it is in the stand to add a 5 gallon tank next to it for the sump to drain into when the power goes out? Drilling would be above a 6 inch water line. Two risky?

I can wet the tank while drilling still just want to know your thoughts.

i do not see why not as long as the tank is drillable and the water back siphoning from the dt is slower then the water going to the seprate 5 gallon bucket or what not. risky yes it is always risky drilling a 10 gal too thin of glass but it can be done why not add a 20 tall as a sump then problem solved? same foot print just taller?

i just say be very careful since 10g glass is very thin.... do it slowly, take extra time. if it cracks? its not the end oh the world. u can always patch it up with acrylic lots of silicone.

And if you are going to drill it yourself. dont know if you done it before... remove the drill bit... i think its a waste of time. just go straight with the drill (outer) one... just make sure you use a wood jig to hold it steady and not wonder off.

The only tank i could fit in the stand was a 10g. Tried a 20 and 15. The 10 was a tough enough fit. I've drilled before and already have my jig made. If it cracks i'm kinda screwed. What i'm saying is the sump is non removable from the stand now and theres going to be 6 inches of water in it while i'm drilling.

Do you think the pressure of the water in the tank would cause problems with drilling it?

i was just going to have this pan i have under it with a rubber flap pressing agains the glass then running an aqua lifter on it. lol

I would not drill it while you are using it / have water in it. If it cracks water is all over the floor and you have to removed it all anyways.

I would look at adding a u-tube or have a taller sump made. Since there is not a lot of pressure on a sump you could actually make it yourself pretty easy

On the sump i have i made the baffles my self. I don't even have room for an extra inch and a half if i put a taller one in and would have to cut all my pvc. I was planning on just taking all the water out of the baffled section i was going to drill. If anything ill redo my pvc, baffle a new 10g and drill it, for the 5 g drain tank. I was just trying to avoid that.

Actually lol i wouldn't need to make a new sump if i pulled it out. Thanks guys for the honest opinions. Im just gonna remove and drill it.
