Rating Reef Fish

Hi everyone!

I know most of us keep fish in with our reef aquarium for various reasons. Would you rate your favorite fish and give your reasons for having this fish in your reef aquarium and enclose a pic if you have one! This good be fun and educational as well! Thanks, Johnny

My favorite fish that I have is the Copperband Butterfly. I obtained this fish primarily to rid my tank of aiptasia!

I would rate this fish a 9 for the following reasons!

1. Reef safe with caution

2. Will consume all your small feather dusters in your tank.

3. It is a very beautiful fish

4. It adds alot of movement to your reef and very viewable.

5. Will nip at some corals especially LPS. Has not bothered my clams and no real damage at all!

6. Can be a problem to feed but if done properly not a issue!

7. I would recommend this fish but do the research and decide if you want this fish in your reef or not.

Good post JOhnny. Lets see if i can follow up with it. Knowing my deep affection for fish I would have to go with the Vlamingii Tang. I would not recomend this tang to anyone who doesnt have a huge aquarium, I mean huge. It grows very fast and eats like a pig.
Its good qualities are that it is totally passive, no fights, no pestering. If its green and lives in your tank he will eat it ( got rid of a razor calurpa pleague I had been fighting for years in 2 days). He changes color depending on his mood. He goes from a light grey with electric blue viens, yellow belly and blue stripe above the eyes to a dull grey.

Man I thought your was big Mike this one is 16 x4 x 4 I think it was I kid you not. The guy is setting it up FW though so I guess to each his own huh

BTW My fav fish is a Mandrin.

I have had mine for about a Yr now and when I rescued him from ummmmmmmmm (we wont use the P word) he was skinny as a rail abd now he is Plump and seems very happy he is the only fish my damsils and clarki havent killed.

My God, Mike! That's an absolutely gorgeous fish!! I take it that this is the one that eats 1/2 heads of lettuce a day?

ok this is a bit long

ok here is some of my opinions
Damsels: They're aggressive little monsters who harass other fish endlessly. which we find out the hard way, but they are very colorfull(my vote 1) your choice

Clowns: got to love them, i have a marron(gs) (my vote 8)

Anthias: they need a constant supply of micro life (copepods, etc) to thrive. So, they only do well in mature systems. (my vote 7) dont have one (hear say)

Wrasses: they're hyper little boogers and some eat or harass shrimp. They also hide out a lot, so you don't get to watch them. also most are very colorfull (my vote 7) dont have one yet

Tangs: they poop massive amounts and then eat it (so ive herd). some are peacfull and some are not. i have a yellow and a naso w/o problems(my vote 7)

Butterfly fish: not reef safe. (my vote 5) dont have one, hear say

Angels: not reef safe. this (as in most fish) depends on the fish, most are very colorfull (my vote 4) i have a coral beauty, hasnt harmed anything so far (wifes fish)

Mandarins: specialized diets and need a mature tank and they die in most cases after a few months from starvation i think this is due to lack of knowlege and young tanks. very colorfull (my vote 2/4) dont own one, hear say

Gobys: Some of them hide a lot, and form a relationship w/ pistol shrimps and dig in the SB, overall a good fish(my vote 6)dont have one,hear say

Blennys: Great fish some peck at corals most are very colorfull and funn to watch some people say they are hard to keep because of feeding problems. (my vote 8) i have a LM (algea) blenny, has tripled in size

man that is a lot of typing for someone who cant type

PS the reason i didnt give a 10 is because, IMO, a 10 is a totally reef safe fish and are few and far between

Yea I tend to agree with your list to TD. Thiers always the exception to the rule but as a whole your pretty darn close.

SOS yep thats the Pig with fins. Good thing I dont have any Miracle Mud it would probibly role in it

Jeff I heard about it...Johnny said he wouldnt do a big tough tank again after mine....I didnt think that would last very long

My favorite is the Marine Betta. Got one years ago from midtown. Len has it up at his barbershop on the top of QueenAnn hill.

I think a good clown or pair you can't go wrong with. Sure, some can be a bit rowdy, but they are really cute and full of personality. Mine hosts an LTA, but before i got the anenome, it hosted a clam shell. It wouldn't leave that shell. I would move it around and it would follow it everywhere.

My number two pick would be a Copperband just because I've always wanted a nice looking butterfly and these can be reef safe. Although i would worry about it with an anenome.

My third and last pick would be a decorated rabbitfish. Nice and peaceful. Eats algae. Swims all around. The deal breaker for some is the toxic spines.
