Back years ago when the world was still a molten ball of lava ...

Ok so years ago when I first got back into the hobby and found out all the info on the www I found swf.com and it's forum. Neet! I signed on and read read read then found out I had questions. So I asked some. One of the questions I had was that I had looked on their 'for sale' site and was unable to find 12" NO actinic bulbs for my refugium and asked where to find them. Apparently SWF.com is paranoid about someone finding something elsewhere - even if they don't sell it. So they banned my username. Dipwads.
So I tried to find out what happened. No warning, no email, no slap on the wrists - nothing. Of course trying to reach these people is like trying to find a cow that talks which is a prime reason I dont think I'd buy anything from them. I like to be able to reach whoever I'm sending money to by phone or email. Email preferred.
so I got a new username and went on. After a few weeks I had found these tank minder programs and was wondering which one was better. So I posted my question and again I got banned. Luckily after this point I had contact with a few people on that board via email and emailed them. They turned me on to reef central, reefs, The reef tank, and reef frontiers. Since then I have not been back to SWF except to make sure the .com I used to work for was priced better than SWF. :p

I don't think I post anything way out there. I'd rather like to think I'm fairly tame and boring.

Thats funny, but makes since. I wanted to post a sign on my LFS bullentin board about this place to help people do the hobby right, that way i can trade with them! and start a club. But i dont have the nerve to ask my LFS because i know they want to keep the people dumb so they can sell their merchandise and be the "all-mighty" one. I would need an angle i think.

Im rather tame and boring too!

Yeah most of your 'lesser' quality LFS won't like you to be competition. 'Smarting' their clients helps them make better decisions. I think the innocent 'club' might be a good approach. I tried to do that out here one time and all the LFS said "Sure if anyone asks we'll give them a flyer and keep them behind the counter" and I'm like "cant you just post it up at the board like the for sale stuff?" heh.
You CAN try to start the club and see if the LFS will let you meet there, see if they'll even give you 10% off on meeting nights for stuff in the store. That would work as an advantage for them and get a list of names and numbers (establish contact) for you ... just a thought.

Good Luck

My LFS store owner is way cool, i just dont have the nerve to ask. I have another guy from around here that is going to do it under that theory. My LFS is really great and i do rec gettin all my fish from there. It would be super cool to have the LFS give the group a discount, but your right it might not be beneficial to the store to "smart" the customers, i guess we will see when he asks to put up the sign. She also cleans tanks around town and says thier are many in the area, but you cant find them. I should just put an add in the paper for SW fish and then when they call ill be like, just joking what to be in my club! LoL!

if you are spread out then the LFS 'club' will be the way to go. Eventually as your numbers grow you can move to a community center, or restaurant that can accomodate a group of people. If the owner is smart though he'll jump on the idea of a local club. I would refrain from talking 'frag trades' and mention things like learning about new products and new livestock on the market, new techniques and round table discussions. If it sounds like $ to the LFS owner they'll usually go for it. If you are doing it to just get cheap corals, well there might be issues with that. Then again if it's a good LFS there might not be ...
