Is it possible to remove nitrates from the DT with a reactor? I would like to replace my fuge/macro algae with a reactor.
What could possibly work for media in this reactor?
Is this possible or am I not getting the science behind it.

I use to have one of those hooked up to a bottle of burbon. Didnt work so well, on top of the headache the next day my arm had holes in it. LOL

Yea pellets. I just talked to Mojo and got a science lesson on a molecular scale.

I understand it can be done, but one must stir the pellets and export the waste to the skimmer.

I am thinking the fuge is not the most efficient way to remove nutrients from the DT water.

that old expression "friends don't let friend's fuge" comes to mind, I read an article long ago about a guy that stuffed a sump sock with filterfloss and dosed vodka there, the bacterial colony only grew in the sock and limited the display problems, the pellets are interesting

dave,

I am using a bio pellet reactor to control nitrates and phosphates...it takes about 4-6 wks until u notice a difference.

Peppie...If you want to go the denitrator route, Talk to Don (DonW). He's built functional ones that worked. As far as the pellets go, I don't know hardly anything about them. I'm old school...LOL!:)

hey peppy i have a denitrator from aqua pure you can have if you can figgure out how it works , cause im clueless on the damn thing . big black box , with tubes suposedly the guy i got it from dosed 5 ml of vodka in it once a week . but its yours if you want it

Thanks Kirsh, I am trying to keep it small and simple

What Chichas01 linked to is what we call a pellet reactor, which are designed to reduce both N and P by providing carbon in a solid form.

I believe what cadillactattoo is reffering to is a true denitrifing reactor. Basically a canister/tube with a whole lot of coiled tubing inside. It is designed to reduce nitrates, the concept is that the bacteria laidened water with in the tubing go through it at a very slow pace, slow enough to keep anoxic and fro the denitrifiers to do their thing.

Sas, you need to drink more and watch less hockey, lol
