recharging a chiller

anyone know the ins and outs of doing this? my 3 year old chiller isn't chillin any more. i can take it to a local AC place that will do it but i dont know how much $ it will cost. there are a few people local that say they have the stuff to do it if i want to but i have rule i try to stick by when messing with equipment. if i dont know exactly what im doing i have to have the money to replace it before i mess with it. i dont really have the money to replace a chiller.
