Recommended Alk

I know there are many thoughts on this, but was wondering what Alk most longer term SPS keepers are running?

I had success keeping my alk around 9 dkh. I think if your between 8-11 dkh you should be just fine.

I agree with between 8-11 dkh. I keep mine at or close to 10 dkh.

Hey mike, what benefit do you get from running higher alk? keeping your CA up? Or is it more about keeping the low side of a swing above 8? I can get a .5 swing depending when I take a test, and when its low its like 7.5. I have been thinking of getting alk higher so the low swing doesn't fall below 8

I keep a higher alk for the simple reason that it is the balance to my CA level. On my signature is a link to a Reef Chemistry Calculator that will help you determine what levels of Alk and Ca balance each other out.

Hello,
I run 7.5-9.0 dKH with calcium @ 375-400ppm and Magnesium of 1180-1200ppm. These levels along with lighting in the proper intensity and spectrum will give you an average of 1" a month growth in SPS corals.
