Red Sea Berlin Hang-on Skimmer question/problem

I just got a used Red Sea Berlin hang-on skimmer - it didn't come with a pump so I hooked it up to my Mag 5? Maybe a Mag 3 (whatever large one comes with the AquaC remora pro) and stuck it in a bucket of fresh water. It's creating fairly large bubbles and doesn't seem to be doing the whole "skimming" thing. Does it need to be in saltwater? Is there something wrong with the skimmer/type of pump?

Nevermind...I think I answered my own question by (after cleaning it) hooking it up to my saltwater tank
