This stuff has just popped up on one of my rocks...Can anyone tell me what the red things are? They stick straight up and are about 1/4 inch high and spreading.....

Here are pictures of my new tank

my concern is how much of the old LF from my 30 gallon do I put into New tank?....I currently have about 90lbs of LF in new tank curing now for about 1 week....my current 30gal.......has this red stuff and a grass like substance growing near the red stuff as you can see in the photos....I think I might have a couple of Bristle worms too in the LF in my 30gallon....

So far the new tank has 175x2 Metal halide with 10k actinic Floures.....

I am awaiting a Euro Reef 100 Protein skimmer......

350 GPH power headsx2

20 Gallon Refugium..............with Cheeto........

60Lbs of Live sand.............

Do I need more LF?.....it kinda looks bare....I am doing a reef tank .....

I'm assuming you mean LR (Live Rock)? If not, what is LF? How much you put in your new tank depends on how large your new tank is. I don't see anything that indicates it's size. From the pics, it definitely looks like you could add a lot more LR.

Next, Bristle Worms are good not bad.

When you say LF do you mean LR? (live rock) As for how much, it all depends on you. I was never that big on a lot of rock in my tank, but that was just me. As for the red stuff on the rock, can't say for sure so here's a bump back to the top incase someone else may know :)

Yes I meant LR........Wow, I can't believe the hit the F key that many times....LOL... anyways Yes the tank is 75 Gallons.........Going with the 1lb to 1.1/2 per gallon of LR ....being that my tank looks sparce for LR.....If I add all my live rock from my 30 gallon I will be at the limit ......if I add more will I get "Dead spots" of circulation? with the power heads that I have?........My intention is do keep my Maroon Clown as the only fish...but add 1 or 2 Gobies in about 3 months......

appears to be some type of macro algae, whether or not they are "bad", I will leave to the algae experts. :)

I would consider adding more live rock...and also, either adding more power heads or replacing your existing power heads. You could go with a Hydor Koralia #3 and 1 power head to disrupt the Koralia flow. This will create random flow, which will help with dead spots. The more LR you have, the better...and the more random flow the better.

yeppers or think of a 7/8 way down on back side spray bar ..go look at finns tank he has more rock than u can see throu and no dead spots that i could find, thiers only 6 inches in his tank front w/o rock !!! remember think like the ocean what does the reef do to reef walls ????filters!!!! in and out the rock!!! and in my opinion makes the hole thing look like a ....REEF !!!! and better for critters more area to eat clean look at !

The red algae in your tank looks like red bubble algae to me. About the only way I have found to get rid of it is to pull the rock out and scrub it down with a stiff brush... Don't want to do that in the tank or you will spread spores, also rinse very well after you brush to get as many spores off as possible.

I've had this algae in my tank for years... it kinda comes and goes depending on how dirty my tank is.... Not as aggressive as some other algaes I have bumped into, and the little red jelly-bean bubbles are kinda cool looking :)

I would venture a guess that the Algae is coming out of the rock not growing on the rock. If so only removing the rock and curing long term with no light or boiling it will kill it. Looks like you've also got other algae as well. Some strands of brownish green like stuff I see there...

Hi there Tina, were you referring to the little flat red things? I circled them in the picture below. If so, that is Planaria, a type of flatworm. They are beneficial algae feeders, and help keep your rocks clean, but can become unsightly in numbers. You can vacuum them out over your next few water changes, and get some more live rock for filtration to keep their food from growing on the rocks.

Edit: Maybe not, I keep looking at the pictures and maybe its not? I don't know, want to snap some closer pics for us?

Edit2: Yea, I looked at some in my tank last night, and it looks like Planaria to me!

I also had some stuff like that in my tank. I thought it was bubble algae as well. I purchased three emerald crabs. Although it didn't disappear right away they slowly chomped away at it.
