Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners Part 2

Boomer,

I agree with Debbie. My brain is in information overload. I feel like I'm in college taking a Chemistry class. (yes, that was a compliment) :D

Boomer,

I have a question regarding the two part additives for Ca and Alk.

I use Seachem Reef Complete (restores and maintains calcium to levels found in natural seawater without affecting pH ) and Reef Plus (full spectrum supplement of trace components such as iodide, bromide, molybdenum, iron, manganese, cobalt, potassium, inositol, choline; important vitamins such as C and B12; and beneficial amino acids, such as cysteine, proline, glycine, alanine, and lysine); it complements Reef Complete.

So after reading this article, dosing trace elements are not recommend. Therefore, if I stop using Reef Plus, what do I replace it with, Reef Carbonate (It is a concentrated (4,000 meq/L) optimized blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts designed to restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium.)?

So my additives would just be the following:

Reef Complete
Reef Carbonate

???

Thanks,
Kirk

Thanks for the thread Boomer. I figure if I only read one of the linked articles every few days steam from frying brain cells probably won't start escaping from my ears. Seriously though, much of this info seems to be alluded to in member posts but not always in detail. I am greatful to find such a wealth of articles to help me figure stuff out.

Yes Kirt you have it correcton all counts. You could also use Reef Builder in stead of Reef Carbonate. Reef Builder is more Baking Soda than anything and will have less of an impact on pH, while rasaing the Alk. Reef Carbonate is a combination of WS and BS, so it will impact the Alk even more and even the pH some.

Shanon

well, soon that will stop, as there is only one more article Randy will be writing.

That is sad Randy will only be writing one more.

I just found out about him.

And just for the record my prain is still cooling off. I start thinking about the article and little wisps of steam start leaking from my scalp. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer to get back to studying it.

Debbie,

Click on the Reefkeeping Library link in my signature.

Every single article that Randy has written (several are not from ReefKeeping or Advanced Aquarist) are down there. To be more exact (will be there...I'm a little behind due to tax season).

Thanks Curt. Will do.
And my little green mantis is doing well in my cpr bakpac skimmer. Hehe who would have thought. I noticed (she/he) really keeps it clean but there are myisd shrimp in there and the cheato which is like her tree house (as it floats). :)

Hello;

This has to stop --- no discussion --- no arguments --- just links to peoples' articles who know it all!

"I know everything --- just ask!"

"I like my unsubstantiated biased opinion better than your proven scientific facts!"

Enjoy!

Then you must be out of touch. The articles came from past discussion and arguments over the years and is why they were written. It seems to me from this post YOU seem to think you know it all. It is funny how you say -- no discussion --- no arguments --- just links to peoples' articles who know it all! then go on to quote those articles in some of your posts with -- no discussion --- no arguments --- just links to peoples' articles who know it all! as if is gospel.

Well, here we go again. I must have a weird sense on humor!

I was a joke and a kick in the pants to get some threads started. It worked!

As are my signature quotes.

Like your bomb Boomer. Who I am sure some find offensive.

I will just read and not post to eliminate any and all confusion in the areas you moderate.

Feel free to post in my fourm. If some of your posts were meant as humor I gues I and others did not see it. So, we will just forget about it all and start over :)

Let's us all have a gentleman's agreement that this stops here. Time to just chill.

I haven't read all the posts. Frankly I don't have time to.

OFM.....if you wanted to get threads started, do what I would do. Send a PM to Boomer and say, XYZ would be a cool thread. This does NOT have to be adversarial.

Even Boomer said so.
