Refugium return pump

The return pump from the refuguim has like a sponge filter on the intake. My question is should I leave the filter on it or take it off and just leave the cage around the intake?

I took mine off so it wouldn't act like a biological filter. I had the cage piece on it, but took that off as well to save space and just put an elbow on the pump so it can suck really low in the sump. HTH

Thanks for the quick reply, I took off the sponge last night to clean it (and it was dirty) I left it off. I was wondering if it would act like a biological filter.
