Rescued Montipora

I brought home a Monti today. About 80% of the coral tissue is still alive. The polyps weren't even extended in the store, but As soon as I put it in my tank, the polyps started appearing. They are orange. Will the dead tissue repair itself? It already seems to like my tank. My temp is much cooler than the store's temp. I am able to keep the tank between 72 and 76. It stays around 75 during the day. I like this coral and hope it can repair itself. Anything I can do to speed the healing process along?

Nothing is speedy in reefing Becky. From your description it sounds like the coral is doing fine in your tank and will recover, but it's time that will tell, not me. Keep your water parameters good and constant andthe coral should do well. Just remember, the tortous won the race & not the speedy hair

I have corals that I love and can honestly say I've never spent above 20 bucks on a single one of them Back to the monti though, Will the tissue regenerate?

if all goes well, new tissue will overgrow the exposed sleleton.

Becky, I like that you have saved several corals from death. I feel like I need to warn you, There are pathogens that you can bring home from sick corals that may wipe out your tank. RTN, rapid tissue necrosis, STN slow tissue necrosis, something called white band, and another called brown jelly, I applaude what you are doing I just don't want to see you lose all the ones you have saved to one that can't be healed. I hope you keep doing what you do, just be careful. I hope that saves you some grief, if you want I will try to find links to help you I.D. the sick from the damaged. Damage grows back, sick spreads. Good to know. Anybody have any info on these things? What to look for etc? The leather I rescued was just tiny and not in the right conditions. The Monti has some brown on it, but it's polyps are extended and looks otherwise healthy. It was in the back of a cubicle in the LFS with hot water conditions and poor lighting. I think it just needed some tlc. I am kind of scared now. I don't want my other corals to get any diseases. Could someone spread a little more light on these diseases?

Becky I did not mean to scare you. A book by Eric Borneman called Aquarium Corals has great info, the September 2004 Tropical Fish Hobbist, has a article on them. I really recomend the book by Borneman, it will save you the cost of the book in live thriving corals. Good water quality and empathy ( which you obviously have ) goes a long way. Steve

Becky - Check out the articles in the Coral Disease Research Section of the resource library. You may find some helpful info there. I would also recommend Anthony Calfo's book "Coral Propagation". I also wanted to ask if you keep your tank at the cooler temperature for a specific reason? Good luck with the coral. Please post pics when you can. It is great to see progression photos.

The Montipora looks good today. All orange polyps are out and beaming. I actually fragged a little piece off and both pieces of monti are doing well. I have a cooler water fish in my tank (Gecko Goby). He's off the coast of S. Cali and Northern Mexico. The waters there aren't freezing, but aren't 85. My corals and other fish love the cooler temp and everything looks better with those temps. My fish are more active. It usually stays around 74 during the day. At least I'm not having heat issues. When I was having issues with heat, my corals weren't as happy. These cooler temps are due to a fan over the tank.

Oh and Wrightme43, It was good that you pointed out the disease issue. I really didn't give it too much thought before your post, and it's something I really need to be aware of. I reasearched the SPS diseases and the Monti digita is just ailing a little from what I fear was just an overheated tank at the LFS. There are a few polyps protruding from the areas of the coral that have appeared to die. I am optimistic. I think with good care it will make it. Thanks everyone for the important information!
