return pump question

yes but flow is flow and free is free. :) He wouldn't be hurting anything was my point. It wouldn't be ideal but might eliminate the need for extra powerheads.

Not if its preventing the skimmer from collecting the fish poop. Not if its overheating the little 29g tank. Flow is not just flow, there is a big difference between flow and circulation they are two completely different system. Just like your heater and chiller.

I understand that, but I really was thinking about from the point of view of the animals in the tank (they don't care where the flow is comming from). You are right, I don't have corals yet so I didn't think about what happens when you feed them. Movement in the tank would be much different than circulation in that case. You would be scrubing the food out of the water rather than blowing it around at them.

Would you have a problem if I said that flow is flow in a FO or FOWLR tank? Or am I overlooking something here too?

Back pressure always adds cost.

I was trying to say that a free pump is worth picking up. I have a hard time believing that saving a dollar(ish) a month could add up to a savings over the cost of a smaller sump pump and a couple of power heads.

Think of a sump as a water treatment facility that you pay to clean your water and keep it at the proper temp. If you were paying wouldnt you expect clean perfect temp water?

Both are two different systems FO or SPS regardless. FO you still want a efficient treatment faility. You just need a much less powerful flow system.

Make sense

holy hell we took that a step forward

Not really, theres a little more to selecting a pump other than brand and gph.
A well designed system is going to be much easier to maintain and keep stable. Stability temp and chemistry wise will give anyone a much better chance of succeeding in this crazy hobby.

I'm sorry this got all blown out of whack. Don, I respect your opinion, which is why I'm still trying to pick your brain. And I really hate to beat a dead duck. BUT... (last time I swear)

That 1200gph pump with a 3-4' head loss is only going to put out 900gph (ish). I've been looking at smaller end skimmers and I think they usually use 500gph (ish) pumps. Over kill? Yeah, but its free! Were talking about a factor of less than 2x. IYO is that really too much?

Hope I'm not starting an argument here.

Yeah buddy, its all your fault!

Hopefully Dons on the same page :) , but I love to argue. Someone walks away learning something, and the other satisfied they tought someone something.

I'd say get the free pump and sell in order to pay for the Mag 7. Take a look at Marine Depot or Prermium Aquatics for the Mag 7 pump.

It's a pondmaster something or other. All I know is that he said he had no use for it, so I said I'll take it. He said it was a 1200gph pump.

Sure it's a $100.00 pump for free and if all you need is the impeller that's only $20.00. I'm sure someone could use even if you cannot. The key word is it's "free" cannot beat that price. You might even be able to pull off a trade or something for your mag7.
