Been a long time since I had a sump and now I'm downsized to a 20 gal tank. Wondering how I get the right size return pump if I use a hob overflow

Figure out how many gallons of water the overflow handles and then get a pump that will pump less after head loss.

Are you going to buy a new return pump? Maybe buy the DC voltage pump? So you can control flow?

I know the price is attractive, but remember Jeboa pumps are know to be undependable.
IMO money for something as critical as the return pump should be spent on pumps with proven track records

It's really going to depend on what size overflow. Money may be an issue so I may have a slower one. It's for a small tank for now

Yes, mine is just an example of what is out there. But please research on which one. DC pumps exist and they are very flexible.
Having said that, it will be my next return pump. The only issue I have is that my return pump won't die. 14 years and it still running.
Mag 5 is the pump I am using.

I'm not knocking DC pumps at all. In fact I'm a big fan.
I current have them on all my tanks and am currently waiting for a Vectra M1 coming in the mail today.
I have not had a tank as small as a 20 that needed a sump pump, so my guesses would have to be specific to brands such as Eheim, and Sicce.
Mags are kind of like the old dependable work horse's of the hobby.
For a 20 gallon tank, I would look for something that would provide maybe 100 gallons per hour at the tank.
If you haven't bought the overflow yet, maybe consider something like the eshopps small overflow kit?
Make it a drilled 20?
