just had my rbta, that I have only had for 2 weeks or so meet one of my powerheads. I have noticed the thing moving around the tank quite a bit. I kept having to move a frag or two for worry of sting. Its color was always vibrant and I have 9watts p/gal of light so I cant imagine it wasnt getting enough light. But cant for the life of me figure out why it would have gone into a powerhead a foot away from any rock at the top corner of my tank. Never had one before though, i didnt think it would move around so much... Real shame it was beautiful. Anything catch your eyes before I submit another one to this? Maybe I jsut got a traveler. It was right after a water change and it had shrunk down behind the rock during so.

I had the same thing happen to mine. It stayed in one spot for about a year then decided to go on a walk about. It met Mr. power head and lost the battle. You really need to put sponges or some sort of guard around the PH.

They'll do that from time to time for no apparent reason that we know of. It's a living creature with a will and desire of it's own regardless of our best intentions.

Sorry for the loss. :(

I've never kept anemones, let's get that out there first of all. I keep hearing things about them getting sucked into powerheads.. is the death by suction thing only related to submersed powerheads?

I have a tank that overflows to a sump with return pumps and a closed loop that draws down to a Dart for returns. Do folks with closed loop pumps several feet down a feed line have less chance of killing a wandering anemone?

I guess to put it another way.. is it the proximity of the pump impeller that kills these lovely critters.. or the suction?

Cheers,

Chris

hmm, i wuold think a dart would pull it in as well even if its kinda like spaghetti through a strainer :) Mine was on a tunze 6025 so no way to put a foam on it.

It's both.

With power head (PH) it's the suction along with getting sucked into the impeller and diced up. With Closed Loops (CL) it's the suction they sucked into and them cannot get free. With PH's you can put a sponge around the intake and to decrease the suction or I've even seen people putting plastic gutter guard around them. You can apply the same thing to a CL intake also or another option is have more than 1 intake. That way the suction is spread across couple instead of 1 trying to feed a pump that pumps 2k GPH from one. Which is advised anyway to also help prevent sucking up fish, snail, soft corals, etc. that are to close.

Nice link, thanks. Certainly gives me some pause as I consider anemones in the future...

Cheers,

Chris

ive had meny things sucked to a power head...
mainly the reason is lack of strength.

the BTA was colourfull?
it was sticky and eating?

unless it was streded, you might have bin able to save it..

My sea slug met the power head, i turned it off and he worked his way outta it....

If this happened right after a water change... i would think that maybe the water change was not done right, and weakened the BTA makeing it release it foot, in attempt to get away from the new water.... = powerhead...

sponges on the power heads need to be cleaned a lot...

next time turn the power head off, and see if it can work its way outta the screen (unless its shreaded)

Great info all. As far as the water change, I had the water mixing for about a day. This is my first tank with a sump. I syphon the water out of the main tank. then pour the buckets of fresh into the sump where the pump is and just let it do the work of filling the tank back up. Now the sump was full of junk that would up in the water column, but i figure that is the same as it coming out of the rock or other. I think it might have just been taking a "stroll" like mentioned in the web page above. I was nut sticking silversides in it, but just a little Rod's when I had a chunck after feeding the tank. I probably should have just let it work its way out. It looked pretty damaged though. But after reading that site I will absolutely do that if it ever happens again.

whatcha gotta do is remove the filter basket and let the BTA and the filter basket fall to the sand
